So if Rudy backs McCain, and Huckabee stays in Mitt is screwed. However, if Huckabee withdraws before next Tue, Huckabee would likely support Mitt, and that will likely bump Mitt ahead of McCain. The bigger question is, when will Huckabee withdraw? Also, with Ron Paul getting as many votes as Rudy, in many cases, if Paul drops out, it is likely that his peeps would go to Mitt's camp, thus hurting McCain even more. The events leading up to Tuesday will be critical. There will be much money offered to encourage candidates to withdraw, and we may even see a promise of VP in exchange for a withdrawal. Grab your popcorn, or go out and eat like a pig. Super Tuesday is also Fat Tuesday this year. Coincidence that pork and elections coincide? I think not.

I think it is highly unlikely that Huckabee will ever support Romney. I think Huckabee dislikes Romney for personal and religious reasons. I'm hope I'm wrong--I'd like to see Huckabee overcome some prejudice and support Romney.

I agree. I should have stated that Huckabee's conservative background would lean more towards Mitt, than McCain. Huck should see by now that he isn't a player, just as Edwards isn't a player. Even without endorsements from Huck himself, I think his followers would be more likely to vote for Mitt, who is more conservative than McCain. Makes me wonder how much of Huck's desire to be President is truly based on his beliefs. If that were the case, he would go ahead and jump on board with Mitt. However, IMO, the Southern Baptist in him would never support a Mormon.

Tootsie, you are assuming that McCain will win the GOP nomination. I still think that McCain is too left for the GOP's base.

That is why I think McCain will pick Fred Thompson as his running mate. They are good friends too, and Thompson will definitely help with the base. I would prefer a McCain/Leiberman ticket but I think the right would be very displeased. In any event, Republicans will come out in droves to defeat Hillary if she is the nominee and thus will be forced to support McCain in spite of their trepidation.

Huckabee was in Orlando at the mega-Baptist church last week, I believe. Could you imagine Romney campaigning in mostly Mormon venues? Huckabee gets the pass on this, and Romney is trashed for just being a Morman. What a country!

I have no idea who McCain would select for his VP, but I find it difficult to believe he would chose Thompson, simply because Thompson cannot deliver the votes. He performed on a similar level as Richardson, when it came to getting votes. I think McCain would choose someone who can deliver enough votes to take the win. Leiberman, maybe, but I don't think he can bring the votes. Remember that when the Rudy fans who are against taxes, the Huckabee fans who are more conservative than religious, and the Thompson few switch camps and go to the less liberal than McCain camp, aka - Mitt Romney's, McCain will likely struggle in a very close race.

If John McCain is the Republican nominee I wish that he would pick Mitt Romney as VP. It seems to me that they would make a great team with Mitt being strong on the economy and McCain being strong on the war. Is the only reason that wouldn't ever happen because of ego?

As a Republican I have been leaning towards McCain because I think that he would do better in a general election particularly if Hillary is the democratic nominee but after watching the debate last night I found myself being more impressed by Romney.

I will be satisfied with either nominee but I sure would like to have both of them.

I woud also ask why the democratic nominees wouldn't do the same thing - combine forces for either a Clinton/Obama ticket or vice versa. I will be watching the democratic debate tonight - reality tv at its best.

I must be missing something here cause I do not recall a VP ever actually doing a whole lot.
