The weird tastes doesn't come from a lack of sugar, but rather from the artificial sweeteners. Fat is critical to our diets, and also keeps the brain going strong, however, too much is not good for one's health. It's all about balance. Same thing for sugars. I wish that instead of companies using artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, etc, as their way of saying "no sugars," they would simply reduce the amount of sugars they put in their products. Whether or not the ingredient is sugar or nutrasweet (TM), the mind is hooked on the sweet tastes. The mind can quickly adjust that addiction to the sweet taste, by cutting back over a short period of time, thus, not wanting all of that sweet stuff.

I totally agree with these statements SJ.

For the last 2 years I have been addicted to Diet Mt. Dew. I started cutting the carbs 2 years ago and figured that Diet Dew, and Splenda, and Sweet n Low, and the rest of the fake sweetners was the way to go. Let me tell you about what has happened to me since I did that. First, I started having bad headaches and short term memory loss. I know I am getting older, but the memory loss came on about the time that I started putting the fake sugars in my body. I did some research and lo and behold they have found that the fake sugars do cause short term memory loss, and headaches. So, for the last week I have weened myself off of them. I like a little sweetness in my coffee and so I discovered Stevia. It is all natural made from a plant. It is way sweeter than sugar and a little goes a long way. A friend of mine told me about it. You can get it at Health Food stores. If you use to much it tends to have a slightly bitter taste, so you have to experiment to get the correct amount for you. OH, and I really like carbonated sodas, and I don't want to drink the high calorie real ones so here is what I did as well. I got me some sparkling water and some unsweetened Juice and put a little Stevia in it, mixed it up and made my own soda. It actually is pretty good. OH, and I do the real butter, real sour cream, real cheese...just in moderation. I have learned that is the key.

There was a book I read back in the 80's:scratch:I think.. any whoo, the Sugar Blues ... any who... awesome read about Sugar;

"A multitude of common physical and mental ailments are strongly linked to the consuming of 'pure', refined sugar. Sugar taken every day produces a continuously overacid condition, and more and more minerals are required from deep in the body in the attempt to rectify the imbalance. Finally, in order to protect the blood, so much calcium is taken from the bones and teeth that decay and general weakening begin. Excess sugar eventually affects every organ in the body. Initially, it is stored in the liver in the form of glucose (glycogen). Since the liver's capacity is limited, a daily intake of refined sugar (above the required amount of natural sugar) soon makes the liver expand like a balloon. When the liver is filled to its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids. These are taken to every part of the body and stored in the most inactive areas: the belly, the buttocks, the breasts and the thighs.

Yes, and I like to save my liver capacity for alcohol. :D

I eat everything full fat, butter, Fago yougurt, olive oil, blue cheese, cream cheese, fatty steak but quit eating refined carbs, no sugar and avoid the slpenda thing when I can. I weigh 115 and am 5 ft 3 in. 48 years old. Best thing is I'm never hungry When I used to eat low fat I felt hungry all the time.
Once you get used to eating food without sugar everything taste so much better. Fruit taste really sweet.

Kathydwells, my Mom has a similar story. She has been hooked on Diet Coke since the stuff came out. This past year, my sister yelled at her enough, because of Mom's health problems, and made Mom promise to stop drinking those damn Diet Cokes. She agreed, and is now drinking Diet Dr Pepppers. (bang head here for my sister) I don't think my Mom wants to get off the sugar bubbles. I haven't heard about the artificial sweeteners causing the problems you mention, but there are studies showing that there is potential short-term memory loss associated with aluminum, in which many of the drinks are contained. As a kid, I consumed more sodas than my mom, but have weened myself off, and probably drink less than a 6 pack in a given year. I'd rather drink water.

I know that making your own beverage isn't convenient, but your body will appreciate you. I've known about Stevia for a long time, and used it for a while. I never liked the taste, and don't need the sweetness any more, so I don't use it, though I do believe that it is much better for you than all of the other sweeteners which they put in our beverages. For me, a ripe banana or a glass of cranberry juice is sweet enough for my occasional taste of sugar.

Here's an interesting way to look at it.

Cocaine is super refined cocoa bean.

Sugar is super refinded sugar cane.

Cocoa is also used in chocolate.

Sugar can be purhased in the raw and is much tamer.

I thought Chocolate was made from Cacoa Beans, and Cocaine was made from Coca leaves. Cacoa and Coca are two totally different plants. :dunno:
