I wonder if this if affecting others as it will me. For 43 years I have had insurance coverage with what I consider the best insurance company in the U.S., USAA. Yesterday I received notice that as of Oct. 7, 2008 they will no longer cover my condo interior and furnishings for wind and hail damage. The exterior is already covered by Citizens. A call to the company brought forth this response:
1. They would assist me in receiving coverage from Citizens
2. Coverage was being cancelled, in essence, because Gov. Charlie Crist had frozen rates and would allow no increase in premiums by established insurance companies.
3. A requested audience by the CEO of USAA with the Governor to discuss the situation of premiums had been denied.
4. New, unestablished insurance companies have been allowed to come into Florida and write policies with two and three times the premium of that which the established companies would ask if allowed to increase their rates.
I received a slightly different story from the Governor's office which told me only Citizen's rates have been frozen. At any rate, I see a lot of the blame belonging to Charlie and the Legislature for the mess I, and others, are now in limbo regarding property coverage. I would welcome any light SoWallers might shed on our insurance situation and correction of any of the facts as they were presented to me. What do you think and is there anything we can do? I have already called my representative's office, the Governor's office and soon my Senator's office to express my extreme displeasure with the insurance debacle. Any comments would be appreciated.

So sorry to hear this (and not just because I'm a USAA policy holder).

Quick question: Is this your permanent residence?

Do you have more than one homeowners policy with USAA? They released some new guidelines for what they would cover about this time last year, as I recall. Does this fall under those guidelines, or is is something new?

As I said in my letter to the President and to the CEO of USAA, "For 43 years I have considered USAA a part of my family but as of yesterday it is just another damn insurance company". That having been said, I now have only one homeowner's policy with them. They are only cancelling the wind and hail portion of the policy. Other than as I have posted, TFT, the letter gave very little information as I am still covered until October and can't receive quotes from Citizens until Sept. All the other info came from a discussion held with the Tampa office of USAA. This, I believe, is something new as they covered Condos for longer than they covered single residences due to the unique type of coverage for condos. Thanks for the interest and yes, this is our permanent homesteaded residence.

I got my "Dear John" letter a couple months ago from State Farm (after several decades) and was told by the State Farm rep (who was now selling Citizens) that I couldn't get a Citizen's renewal until my State Farm policy lapsed (June). I went to another agent and got insurance (other than Citizens) that started immediately. I went back to the State Farm agent dropped my own "Dear John" letter on his desk for BOTH my homeowners AND auto and asked for the remaining policy premiums back. Adios State Farm!
