I wonder if this if affecting others as it will me. For 43 years I have had insurance coverage with what I consider the best insurance company in the U.S., USAA. Yesterday I received notice that as of Oct. 7, 2008 they will no longer cover my condo interior and furnishings for wind and hail damage. The exterior is already covered by Citizens. A call to the company brought forth this response:
1. They would assist me in receiving coverage from Citizens
2. Coverage was being cancelled, in essence, because Gov. Charlie Crist had frozen rates and would allow no increase in premiums by established insurance companies.
3. A requested audience by the CEO of USAA with the Governor to discuss the situation of premiums had been denied.
4. New, unestablished insurance companies have been allowed to come into Florida and write policies with two and three times the premium of that which the established companies would ask if allowed to increase their rates.
I received a slightly different story from the Governor's office which told me only Citizen's rates have been frozen. At any rate, I see a lot of the blame belonging to Charlie and the Legislature for the mess I, and others, are now in limbo regarding property coverage. I would welcome any light SoWallers might shed on our insurance situation and correction of any of the facts as they were presented to me. What do you think and is there anything we can do? I have already called my representative's office, the Governor's office and soon my Senator's office to express my extreme displeasure with the insurance debacle. Any comments would be appreciated.
