Well.. to be honest ...the herons/ hawks/ snakes around here dont really care about who designed your pond or how inbred your koi are... all they seem to be interested in is those pretty colorful fishes. But like Sand Angel said... most koi will survive winter here as long as you break the ice so they can get air. But knowing what I do about the local predators, there is NO WAY I would spend alot of $$ on fish for an ornamental garden.

I am up in Boston for the weekend and see what happens when WE leave Greenroomsurfer unattended again !! ??? :rotfl:

Who's turn is it to watch him ??? :dunno: :rotfl:

At least he just shot the snake.... Could've fired a round off at whoever was supposed to be watching.:D

If ya'll are going to try to keep him out of trouble, all I have to say is GOOD LUCK!:D

I would not spend a lot of $$$ on fish or a pond here for all the reasons above. I mentioned the money people spend and boarding, etc. simply to point out that it is a hobby that some people take very seriously. I am a fisheries biologist and have seen the very extreme side of raising koi. Although I know how to selectively breed fish, I let my fish do their own thing. After all, as free Japanese immigrants to our country, they should at least be allowed to choose their own mates!:D

Yep! That's where they started, but raising koi is a sort of art form. They are bred for ornamental ponds, and the color patterns are very important. Breeders try to select for color patterns that are most dramatic when viewed from above the fish. Some people are very serious about their koi. One of my AU professors used to board koi for the winter for people worried about their ponds freezing and causing fish kills. My fish are mongrels (not selectively bred), but still very pretty, and I don't want them to be dinner for any snakes!

Maybe you should keep your art form somewhere other than a snake's natural habitat.
