Sure I'm funny, but I'm dead serious. Government should have no say in a religious union. Real estate can be purchased by two people with or without marriage. If I have beneficiaries in my life insurance who are not my spouse, I'm sure we can figure out something for 401Ks. Hospital rules can be adjusted. Health insurance needs to be torn to the ground anyway. And I sure as heck am not kidding about tax laws.

I'm freakin' hilarious, but spousal benefits are not funny to single folk. I am not amused by serial marry-ers who work the system. Marriage outside of religion has become a joke, and it's just not funny.

BTW- I thought you were cute in the pic SWGB posted of you eating desert. You are so much more human to me now rather than text by some person. It is a trip how we ( or maybe I) get caught up in the coldness of this medium. I am thinking about startting a thread in the lounge about this...

I've always thought I was adorable with a snoot full of chocolate ice cream. It's the best cold medium EVER, as far as I'm concerned! I'm always willing to be met, and I expect I will be making a trip down very soon to see my favorite Thespian at Seaside... :wave:

I think this thread may be an offshoot of another? Sorry, I haven't had time to catch up, so pardon me if I tangetized.

No, religion and State should always be separate IMO. I don't have to agree with the Church's stance, but, I do believe in separation of Church and State in all matters.

I hope one day the Church changes its stance and reconsiders, because then according to the Bible, I believe it's the Corinthians 6:9 , everyone would be a sinner, and not inherit the Kingdom of God. That would include most politicians. (The part about of Corinthians that includes slanderers, drunkards, and swindlers)
Oh wait, or all of us at one point in our life. :blink:

But, getting back to what SWGB asked, how does it affect others lives? I can't see it affecting anyone's elses lives, with the exception of explaining it to children. Parents should be able to explain sexuality to their children when they are ready. My gay male friends behave around children the same way any heterosexual couple would. Matter of fact, they are more conservative in expressing emotion around them. We are not ready to explain why Steve and Rob are kissing, and they respect that. Honestly, I don't even want to watch them kiss, nor watch my heterosexual friends get overly gushy. I think some families are afraid to have to broach this topic with their children. People who tend to keep their children in a bubble, or feel they are protecting them. Gay marriage opens up a can of worms for some parents that they themselves have not yet accepted or understand.

Surely this applies to civil unions? :wave: It will be a fine day when every state adopts gay unions/marriage as the rule.

Question...what is the difference between civil union and marriage? Language?

Kitty, when my partner and I are legally able to tie the knot in the State Of Florida legally, I want you to be one of my "groom's maids" (we will need a better word for this I guess?!):D

Spousal benefits? I'll give you an example: Some tactless fool called me last week because he was after my job. I was nice enough to commiserate with him over the scarcity of jobs in his field, and then he piped up with, "But you don't have to provide for your family. What does your husband do, anyway?" I told him that when I meet my husband, I'll let him know. Meanwhile I pay all of the mortgage, utilities, repair bills and everything else all by myself.

It seems that marriage in our society has become a joke, and I'm wagging my finger at straight people. I'm talking about the weddings in Las Vegas that are annulled the next day. (Not that all people who are married in Las Vegas are drunk/stupid/whatever...) I'm talking about the folks who have been married so many times that their kids need a program to keep up with their step-relatives. I'm talking about women who go into marriages with a divorce settlement in mind.

Those are the extreme examples, I know. But how many people do you watch get married with the idea that if it doesn't work out they can always end it? (And before I upset 50% of the population, I realize that there are a LOT of divorced folk out there who don't fit my description. I realize that relationships are, by nature, very difficult.) But it's pretty sad that my brother and I are in the minority by having parents who have been married only to each other for the last 43 years.

Looking at the state of marriage in the U.S., I'm not so sure why gays and lesbians are so fired up about jumping into it. But if they are as committed as the likes of Hnooe and Mr. Hnooe (among others), more power to them. I wish them the best.

I never, ever, ever said that 1) gay marriage infringes on my rights or life, or that 2) it annoys me. It does neither.

What I actually said:


  • I think that we should be free to marry whomever we want according to our beliefs, and that government should stay out of it.

  • I'm annoyed by frivolous marriages, which I see more of in the straight community than the gay community.

  • I think that spousal benefits defined by the government are a nasty mess and should be eliminated.
