In am not commenting directly on why Danny never promoted (because I don't know) but I would like to add insight to the reality of how the Great State of Florida conducts business. Law enforcement promotions at the State level are not always based on performance or even qualifications. I have witnessed incredibly qualified individuals passed over for an applicant with little or no experience, education or training. Most agencies are able to do this under the cloak of " for the good of the agency." Simply stated, that means the friend/offspring/contributor/polictical party toadie has a better than average chance to not only promote, but advance through the system. You can either adapt to this reality, fight the system, or resign yourself to doing the best you can. Ignoring the political crap that permeates law enforcement allows you to go home each day with your pride and dignity intact. That's all I've got to say about that.

Badges, you are correct about promotions around here, especially in Walton County; promotions AND demotions!
Don't know about Danny's "Official" qualifications but do know he did a superb job with the boy who was in the car when his Mom drove off the 331 bridge recently. Danny may have years of experience but those years have not dimmed his passion for good law enforcement or caused him to be insensitive or not caring. He is an intelligent and dedicated law man.

I am thankful there are now both Republican and Democrat candidates. If I understand this stupid state's election regulations, it means that at least two people will run in the November election. If this is wrong, please enlighten me. As I have said on more than one occasion, Rapunzel, local electons up to the state level is no place for party political action and is totally unnecessary and a detriment to good local government.

I couldn't agree with you more, Andy A., and would love to see a new charter that would make most of our local races non-partisan, as they should be. However, right now we have a system designed to work for two parties, and if we have only one viable party then the system breaks down. In a perfect world, we'd have non-partisan races and run-offs to get very qualified people in office, but as it stands we have people winning office with the support of small minorities of people. That hasn't led to the best leadership in many cases.

Thank goodness! Now I don't have to read all those boring sheriff threads to decide who to vote for.... A positive comment from a trusted source, and the only person running as anything other than a Republican...

Single party elections are only good in dictatorships.
While I agree totally with your rationale, your syntax leaves me cold.

So, let me get this straight..........Just because Mr. Griffith is a state trooper and Sheriff Johnson was a trooper, they are the same? No differences? Your conclusions are unsupported and your mentality is unfortunate. Mr. Griffith should not be held responsible for Sheriff Johnson's shortcomings or inability to be an effective Sheriff.

I'm sure Mr. Griffith will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Just because a person has not advanced in rank does not singularly mean they dont have the ability. Many people that work for state and local government turn down offers of advancement in return for remaining in an area they prefer to live in. Reasons can vary from family to business interests.
As far as differences between the two men, thats different.
Ralph and Dan have been troopers for a long time and I appreciate their service. But both men have had the same basic training reinforced over a very long period of time. That training inlcudes line supervision, Field Training Officer and a meriad of other advanced training they attended over the years as dictated by the Highway Patrol. The end result is both men are in essence the same as they were trained when it comes to law enforcement. Otherwise they would have been weeded out by the highway patrol long ago.
Is Ralph a nice guy? probably.
Is Dan a nice guy? probably.
But this position is far too important to entrust someone with based on how nice they are. Is education a factor? Yes. Should proven experience be a factor over formal training? I would say very much yes.
To accuse someones conclusions as being unsupported without any offering to the contrary is in itself unsupported. Too bad the energy cant be focused on asking candidates quesitons and demanding answers from them. Votes should be on the candidate only after fully verifying and validating any claims. I recently read an opinion that partisan politics should be tossed out on this local level. Wow what an idea. Voting for the person and not the party. That folks seems more like a wild dream even more than affordable renewable energy.

Good points ( although I doubt Ralph is a "nice guy") but this is an academic excercise until after the primary when we know who we must compare Mr. Griffiths to.:dunno:
