English is the universal language. When business meetings are held in Europe and the meeting participants are from different countries, they speak English. When the EU meets, they speak English for crying out loud. Air traffic controllers and pilots the world over speak English. So, when a Turkish pilot talks to air traffic control in China, both sides speak English.

Why is this so? Because the US is the dominant economic engine of the world and green is the universal color. Britain held the mantle before us hence the English legacy is long-standing.

As for Obama suggesting that we teach our kids Spanish, he himself does not speak Spanish. Was he being an elitist? If he had suggested any language other than French, I would say no but by pushing French, he pandered to his leftist supporters on the upper west side. This may have been an attempt to negate his move to the middle and the accompanying fanfare. Now that he has locked lips with the French, he can now safely scamper back towards the middle.

Anyone who thought he was pandering to the French needs to learn English as a first language.

Well yeah, but the operative question is why? Or more specifically, why now? In addition to his leftist pandering, he goes to Europe in two weeks and his ports of call include Paris. The Dems seem to be obsessed with "restoring our reputation in the world" and especially in western Europe. Paris seems to be the targeted crossroads for the repair work hence Obama, I'm guessing, also pandered to the hapless French so they would assemble in huge thongs in the street and cheer him and then those here at home who care about such things, well they can allow the warm and fuzzies to run down their backbone or if they want to be like Chris Matthews, down their leg.

This makes me think that you missed my intended sarcasm when I said-

And here the whole time I thought Obama was addressing the fact that, unlike most industrialized nations, the vast majority of the US population is not multilingual (and that we should do something about it)...

But rather than making reasonable points all this time he was really pandering to those elitest French bastages...

I meant that I was fascinated that this is your take on Obama's words and actions because mine is very different...
And I was making fun of the fact that so many in this country view the French as they do (e.g. Freedom Fries). I don't think the French are bastages but I understand why the world things we are and this is what Obama is thankfully trying to fix...
