That venerable institute of culinary perfection known as the Varsity (or the Greasy-V if you attended Ga Tech) turned 80 today and is having a big celebration.

GTTBM and I responded to the call of "Whatdayahave?" and went down this morning to pay homage and partake.

They had a pretty interesting old car show going on (GTTBM really wanted the 1933 LaSalle) live music and FREE ICE CREAM!. 97.1 The River FM was there as well.

We also saw that big international celebrity, star of television and radio, Scotty Mayfield.

Frank Gordy's (the founder) daughter runs the V now and she was there being interviewed by the DJ from 97.1.

Being the delicate flowers that we are, we dined inside and purchased a dainty, but traditional meal (see picture below.) We also got a couple of nice T-Shirts. (I think its the first time I ever purchased a nonfood item there.) After eating we waddled back to our car, sated, happy and slightly sticky.

All in all, it was quite a moving experience. (Based on my multi decade experience of eating at the V, it will continue to be a moving experience for a day or so.)

He forgot to identify this fabulous meal. Naked dog and naked steak(hamburger) bacon cheeseburger, with lettuce and tomatoe, chili dog, fries, onion rings (yum!), peach pie, frosted orange, and a diet coke (I was trying to cut back:rofl:).

Oh my was it good! What a walk down memory lane this was for both of us.

Only went there once on a class trip to the capital...interesting place...didn't realize it was so old!

Frank Gordy opened the first Varsity in 1928 after he flunked out of Ga. Tech. He also owned Gordy Tire company, huge business in Atl. back in the day. Mr. Gordy did pretty well for a college dropout. Rest his soul.

.

The exact Varsity-eeze for placing the order is:
Naked steak
Glorified Bacon
Chili Dog
Bag o Rings
Bag o Fries
F.O.
Diet Coke
and a peach pie

I had my money in my hand and my order in my mind when I got to the counter.

My brother lives in Newnan and Quinn, Reed and I had our first trip there in the spring. My brother is so terrified of the staff that he orders the same thing every time. He made us rehearse our order before we got up there and he paid for everyone to save time!

My Dad went to school with the Gordy brothers and the other Gordy started Gordy Tire. I went to Ga. Tech for my undergraduate and would go to the varsity and get lunch and sit in my car and study. In high school, the Varsity was known as the #1 "pickup" spot around if you had a hot muscle car. Lots of good memories there.
