I posted last week questioning whether a stomach virus was going around. Quinn was really sick. Sick enough that we had an ER visit on Sunday night and a regular doc visit on Monday when I was not satisfied with her improvement. While in the ER, they took a fecal sample. This was last Sunday. Since the lab was taking a long time, they released her and said it was "probably a stomach virus but could be appendicitis."

Yesterday, both the Health Dept. and Sacred Heart called. I missed the call from the Health Dept. but Sacred Heart said that she had tested positve for Salmonella poisoning...:yikes: Does it really take that long to get results back from the lab? Thank God she is better though.

I am pretty sure about where she got the Salmonella. I won't say on here but it was fast food and it was in Destin. It was the only thing that she had eaten that the rest of the fam. hadn't and the timeframe of when she ate it vs. when she got sick coincided. I ALWAYS check the kiddo's burgers to make sure they're not pink but she ate this burger on a field trip.

Anyway, she's OK now. A bit lighter, but OK. I wouldn't wish what she went through on anyone...:sosad:

Hold on, I have diagnosed two kids with Salmonella in the last two weeks. I don't think it is coming from a restaurant, but I could be wrong. And it can take several days for the bacteria to be isolated, so long in fact that the symptoms are usually greatly improved or resolved by the time the culture grows.

Beachy, you said your daughter was on a field trip. Where did the children go? Were they petting animals? I'm sure the Health Dept. asked you already, but maybe not. :dunno:

Glad your daughter is better now.

Yay Skunkape! I was hoping you'd respond. The doctors at the ER seemed to think the burger was suspect. I think they said they'd had some cases from food. Where do you think it's coming from?

Mango, they went on a pirate ship cruise. She is pretty freakish about washing her hands. She did mention that a girl she was playing with came back from the restroom and announced, "I never wash my hands when I go to the bathroom." Quinn said she got up right then, washed her hands and refused to play with her or touch the toys...:rotfl: She's very aware of how germs are spread after she was in the hospital with rotovirus a few years ago.

...also, Mango, I haven't talked to the Health Dept. yet. I didn't see that I'd missed their call until it was too late yesterday. I plan to call them on Monday. From what I have read, I assume they will try to identify the strain of Salmonella?

I am also glad to hear that it takes a while to tell that it is Salmonella. I have always been extremely pleased with Sacred Heart and I was kind of concerned that it had taken them that long to get the results.

Smart girl! If only we could get the rest of our kids to do the same - no matter what age.

How long after her burger before she began to get sick?

She had the burger on Thursday around noon. She was really low-key all day Friday and started throwing up Friday night.

Bless her heart...by the time the ordeal was over with we had to slather her hands with lotion. They were so dry from constantly washing!
