nohall - GW was not speaking of you or all christians, but there is definitely a huge growing evangelical group out there with a political agenda from our local schools to the us gov. for some of us it is a legitimate concern.

I would guess most of us in this discussion are christians of one kind or another. but we are more than aware of a massive movement on behalf of one kind of christianity that we just do not identify with. never have, never will.

however, I must say that some of the conservative catholics I know and love are jumping on the extreme political christian right wing bandwagon because it suits them more and more, due to right to life and other religious based issues. most of these well-meaning christians with an agenda also support guns, death penalty, war and many issues that are quite contradictory with regard to their belief system, IMO.

I think its become a big subculture of so-called christians in this country. it is a very big concern for many of us.

Mrs. Palin and her ever growing brood aside, the last few pages of this thread are just a taste of what scares me about the indignant religious right. If you are not with them you are wrong, and on one's way to Hades. The same style of those who would ban Blithe Spirit, and force morning prayer in schools. IMO morning prayer would be better shared with the family in the home, before everyone disperses. The Pledge of Allegiance is more suited to the classroom. My creator does not want me to force my belief on others, and recognizes the rights of others to worship as they choose.

btw, there have been a few instances of personal attacks on this thread. Let's keep the discussion spirited but civil.

I have not seen a movement to start morning prayer in school. But if the students wish to voluntarily pray, I am not seeing the problem. Just like they can voluntarily not pray. This freedom thing should go both ways. But government corporate prayer is certainly a no-no.

wr, my statement was not pointed at our local system, but what I perceive to be simmering below the surface on a larger level, with our taste being Blithe Spirit. It is frightening that an extremely small vocal minority can raise their voice and cripple our curriculum. As stated above I feel everyone should be able to worship as they please, or not.

Not to excuse the crazy evangelicals, but didn't it emerge that the real reason behind the Blithe Spirit ban was a disgruntled student whose parents used religiosity just to sabotage the play? (Which, if true, is an example of someone using religious reasons to manipulate for selfish reasons...) Just sayin...

Yeah, and a huge church congregation made a call from the pulpit to go save those poor kids at the high school...sorry NoHall, but it was right wing Christians at their finest.

There are others on this board more qualified to respond on the above than I. But as you state(sort of) 'by any means necessary' is my fear. Onward Christian soldiers...

For anyone who doubts there is a radical right wing movement within the Republican Party and that they had direct influence in Palin's selection, then do some research on The Council for National Policy.

No matter what your political persuasion, if you care about this country and our freedoms...you owe it to yourselves and your family to be concerned about this
approach to our government IMO.

And, before you throw things at me, I am not talking about all Republicans here any more than I was speaking of all Christians in the other thread.
