The easiest way to watch movies like this one in our area is to rent them when the DVD is released...and you might have to request it. Even then, you might get turned down by some rental stores. I find Movies by the Sea to be a little more accomodating in this respect.

Sounds to me like it might be one for the DVD collection. If it sounds like it's worthy of repeated viewings I might go for it. Yeah, most movies I watch are at home anyway.

Geo, it is on a limited release - even in Chicago. I sort of doubt it has anything to do with it being the Bible belt down by you. Since it's a "Michael Moore" -ish type film, the powers that be want to wait and see before releasing it more broadly.

There is a certain influence against certain films in the Florida Panhandle. When Farenheit 911 was released, I recall strong political pressure in Panama City to prevent theaters from showing this movie. Destin showed it without hesitation. Eventually one of the theaters in Panama City ended up showing it.

He was promoting it on the Daily Show and it sounded pretty interesting.

Supposedly he has been screening it for religious groups and they are taking it in the spirit in which it was intended - seeing the humor instead of feeling threatened by it.

I just don't understand this closed mindness...no one is forcing anyone to go to the movies! Why not have a wide range of choices...and let everyone pick according to their taste and their religion or culture or whatever it is!:bang:

I miss the Independent films so much...and some films are just not the same unless you are watching on a theatre size screen. Oh Well.

Well it says the area is comprised of a majority of Christians--some of whom may be offended, and there may, frankly, not be the audience to support it. I think it is that simple, pure economics. I don't think there would be any mass demonstations and picketing though.
I was amazed that Brokeback Mountain made it to Destin (but Destin seems to be getting a bit more sophisticated).

Challenging peoples faith in NW Florida is like challenging their political ideology. It would be like Muslims suddenly embracing Christianity--yes, could happen, but not likely in our lifetime. Live and let live.

PS: I would go though--Bill Maher is amazing!

A little clarification please. Your idea of sophistication is two cowboys getting it on in a pup tent. I knew there was a reason that I wasn't sophisticated.

Santiago, I think you are very sophisticated--unfortunately your terse summation of the movie being only about of "two cowboys getting it on," says quite about about your interest in culture and art of any type, past or present. Not every movie can be the The Passion of the Christ, Ok?

The "pup tent scene" was only an incidental part of the movie, but obviously it was a scene in which you must have taken some interest in, if you even saw it.
