I suspect that there are many films being shown in this area that would gross less than Maher's film would. I am not crying conspiracy here but Josh-

I have heard that Fahrenheit 911 was hardly shown in this area. That thing was a blockbuster. So the choice to exclude it locally was surely not based on economics but rather based on subject matter. No? I personally think so...

So it probably is not a stretch to say that the subject matter of Maher's film kept it out of some local theaters...

:dunno:

Just because a documentary was successful doesn't make it less of a gamble. Are you saying they are not showing the film because of some Christian outcry that they shouldn't bring the movie here? Or that because of the large Christian base here they wouldn't be profitable? Two ways to look at it.

A little clarification please. Your idea of sophistication is two cowboys getting it on in a pup tent. I knew there was a reason that I wasn't sophisticated.

You're not intelligent enough to understand the sophisticated undertones of that movie. Sophistication out the wazoo. No pun intented.

NPR Maher Interview

Last week I heard a Bill Maher interview about Religulous. You can hear the interview by going to the NPR website and punching in Religulous. Someone needs to put up the link for it. I'm not sure how to do that.

Can a business make a business decision, whether to show or not to show a film, even if customers apply pressure. Maybe go talk to the manager and advise him you and your friends will boycot their theater. See how far that gets you.

Just because a documentary was successful doesn't make it less of a gamble.

All films, independent or big budget studio, are gambles...
There are many films playing in the area that won't do well. And I would venture to guess that Maher's film would do better than some of them...

Are you saying they are not showing the film because of some Christian outcry that they shouldn't bring the movie here?

No.

Or that because of the large Christian base here they wouldn't be profitable? Two ways to look at it.

No.

I'm not saying either...
There are way more than two ways to look at it...

I personally suspect that it isn't being shown here based on a large Christian base (irrespective of profits)...

In other words, I believe the thought of the decision makers is-

Maher's film like all others is a gamble. But regardless of how well it would/wouldn't do (or whether or not there would be an outcry) we choose to take a pass based on the demographic and the subject matter...

Sorry...back to "The Christians ruining my weekend at the Rave" :banging:

I would appreciate it if you wouldn't minimize my opinion to some silly conspiracy theory. I, like you and Wrobert, prefer to interject logic in my politics and exchange of ideas and my points here are no less logical than yours...

Presumably- unless they are contractually obligated to show a film under some bundled distribution deal.

:dunno:

Going with my gut-
I don't think folks who wish the Maher film was showing locally are the type to threaten to boycott a local theater that chooses not to show it.

I'm probably going to pay for this one but in the spirit of finishing my thought above and expressing an honesty opinion-
I do think folks who object to the type of subject matter in the Maher film often are the type to protest/boycott a theater that chooses to show it...

the ultimate irony is that an expose of general religious stupidity would be taken personally, as if the offended were important enough to be the sole target. if you take offense at a comedian pointing out some ridiculous tenets of faith, then perhaps your faith isn't so grounded.
