I agree with the title of this thread. Most of the talking heads I've heard on TV agree with this. I plan to vote for McCain, but he should know that VP candidates are the ones who are supposed to be the attack dogs. The presidential candidate should be above that and say what he plans to do to solve our nation's problems and be a strong leader.[/quote]

While that is, in fact, historically true, the presidential candidates are also in "lock step agreement" with the rants of their VP candidates, whether its Palin or Biden. The presidential candidate is ultimately responsible for his or her VP selection--their agendas remain the same, whether stated outright or not, even if they seem to be "above" the attack.

I hope he stands firm on that!

I have lost a lot of respect for McCain because of the way he is campaigning - it's the complete opposite of how McCain said he would campaign and contrary to what I thought he stood for.

I think right now he is wishing that he had run his own campaign. I feel kind of bad for him.

If you watch the clip of him w/ the "Arab" lady, his frustration and distaste is palpable.

IMO if he was running a classier campaign, it would be a much closer race.

I agree. I wonder why he allowed himself to be manipulated by the conservative base/neo-cons...it seems to me that, even if he was not their favorite, surely they would have voted for him--who else are they going to vote for? and, I don't think the vast majority would have stayed home.

So, why didn't he stand firm and run a campaign that was true to himself? I think he will spend the rest of his life asking himself that question...whether he wins or loses.

If he had run that campaign, and selected a more appropriate running mate, and stood by his principles...the race would certainly be closer today IMO.

At McCain-Palin rallies, the raucous and insistent cries of “Treason!” and “Terrorist!” and “Kill him!” and “Off with his head!” as well as the uninhibited slinging of racial epithets, are actually something new in a campaign that has seen almost every conceivable twist. They are alarms. Doing nothing is not an option.
You know, I have a problem with this lead. I don't think there is a movement of budding assasins percolating in the McCain/Palin crowds. I wonder how many times the above quoted words have actually been yelled at one of their events.
