First off I don't think it's a given that Obama will win. I think McCain should not be dismissed so easily. The GOP knows how to win and they still might. I don't trust polls.

But more than anything, I am sad to see anyone hoping either of these men fail. Since their failure can also hurt our country I would pray they don't fail. I will certainly not be laughing at anyones failure or hoping something goes wrong for them as it will surely impact all of us as well. I have a Bible, I tend to cling to it, mean spiritedness is usually discouraged within it's pages. But hey maybe it's my interpretation...carry on.

Yes, it's unconscionable that anyone would want the next president to fail. Perhaps the words "sad" and "bitter" should precede Hnooe's description.

When the agenda he pushes represents raising taxes on working people and giving handouts to those who refuse to work; take away my right to possess a firearm; take away my right to vote in secret concerning a union "representing" me at my workplace; cut the defense of my country 25%; raise the national debt 1 trillion+ dollars; nationalize healthcare; steal my 401k money that I worked hard to save and roll it into a Social Security system that I do not believe I will ever draw a dime from; etc, etc, I think it is appropriate for me to hope the author of that agenda fails.

Hopefully McCain will get in there and prevent this nonsense from happening.

Right here!

Having lived through the 70's and experienced what complete democratic control of washington is like, I think I'm qualified to make some predictions as to how things will go over the next four years. You can throw some insults, proclaim The One is our savior and all, but in the end Obama and this Congress will be judged on their record. Call me a skeptic, my experience indicates Obama's brand of 'change' may not go as well you 'hope'.

You're reading way, way too much into why people are voting for Obama. This is typical of the "projection" I've seen from Obama's detractors. The reason is really quite simple. Obama's supporters think Obama/Biden makes a good ticket and think that the McCain/Palin ticket really sucks. The reasons for feeling this way have been explained many times by many people on this board and elsewhere, so I'm not going to get into that. Now go take your hormones.

The similarities between this election and the 70s and the 1976 election are striking:

- Unpopular war
- Poor economy
- Oil Crisis
- Hangover from an unpopular President (Nixon)
- Relatively weak Republican candidate (Ford)
- Inexperienced Democratic candidate who came out of nowhere (Carter)
- Electorate wanted "Change"

Carter elected and then:
- Economy gets much worse: Stagflation
- Double-digit inflation coupled with very high interest rates
- Prime interest rate hits 21.5 percent in December 1980! (Hiighest rate in U.S. history)
- High unemployment
- Slow economic growth
- Oil Crisis (1979)
- Weaker foreign policy; Increased isolationism
- Slashed defense spending
- Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
- Iranian Hostage crisis and weak, inept response

1980 Election:
- Reagan defeats Carter in landslide (489 electoral votes compared to Carter's 49)
- One term presidency for Carter
- Reagan revolution begins
