Right here!
We recently passed the 10 year anniversary of the opening of Yucca Mountain, which still isn't open. This seems like a pretty good idea to me, at least as a temporary solution. Having all this nuclear waste spread all over the nation in privately secured storage locations makes me nervous.

Note, Obama wants to close Yucca, and leave the waste where it is. McCain supports opening the facility.

How does other countries (we can pick France) deal with theirs if they use so much nuclear power. Maybe we can learn something from them? :dunno:

Yea, they did think going into Iraq was a really bad idea, so , in retaliation, we stopped eating Fench fries... for about one week. One Grande Mack--Nuke the fries, merci!!

I have no idea, that's why I asked. I'm not sure there is a best scenario. None of us will be around long enough to find out. And of course fulltime will just sulk in the corner.

Aw shucks, I'm too happy to sulk ... plus I won't have time to sulk if I have to work to fund your rebate check. Now, go and enjoy the party at Bud's and be happy.

It's not the fact that people posting here wish to develop alternative energies that led me to define them as anti business environmentalists, it's the fact that they want the government to artificially inflate energy costs in order to force meeting the goal. That, and the fact that the their definition of alternative energy excludes nuclear power. Apparently, nuclear power is OK for France but not for the good ole USofA.

Who is talking about artificailly inflating anything?? I am certainly not for that at all - just like I am against artifically lowering cost of oil or giving gasoline tax (I am much more interested in weaning ourselves off foreign oil).

And I for one would support nuclear power....

Plus actually opening and using it could give the folks in space something to orient on, as it glows green, when looking for the United States. Aliens or Commies either one. Good Lord! What if the Aliens are Commies?:yikes:

We've actually spent quite a bit of money on renewable fuels and incentives to do research. The famed Energy act of 2005 that has come up often on the campaign trail is a perfect example.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Policy_Act_of_2005
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_Independence_and_Security_Act_of_2007

I haven't seen any studies yet detailing the effects of this. The total cost was around 100 billion.

Many on this board are much more qualified than I to talk about energy alternatives - I think this country has a very long way to go before we can start addressing all the needs we are going to have to make our living and consumption more sustainable.

I nearly had a fit about a week ago when I opened a newspaper (forget which one it was) and saw an article in there about US car companies hoping that current lower gas prices would hopefully re-lure potential buyers towards purchasing SUV's - can this country REALLY be this short-sighted and have such shallow memories??? Hopefully not. The small productive and progressive steps that many started making in their lives to accomodate the higher prices should be an incentive to re-evaluate many other aspects of their lives - hopefully not as a temporary solution and sacrifice until gas prices come back down but as a new way of living and consuming.

What the hell does Obama mean that we need a civilian National Security Force, which will be as "well-funded as our military?" Now that is scary, and pricey.

I'm not sure what Obama means by that either. This comment appears during a 26 minute video of his speech on July 2nd in Colorado Springs. It appears at the 16:45-55 minute mark in the speech. Interestingly enough, the Wall Street journal's transcript has at the top "speech as prepared for delivery", which implies that Obama's comments were possibly off the cuff and not on the teleprompter. The Denver posts transcript is "no longer available".

it appears within this section...

As President, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots, and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem ? they are the answer.
We?ll send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We?ll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods. We?ll enlist veterans to help other vets find jobs and support, and to be there for our military families. And we?ll also grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. And we?ll use technology to connect people to service. We?ll expand USA Freedom Corps to create an online network where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer. You?ll be able to search by category, time commitment, and skill sets; you?ll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities. This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda, and make their own change from the bottom up.
We also need to invest in ideas that can help us meet our common challenges, because more often than not, the next great social innovation won?t be generated by the government.

here is a youtube clip, I apologize for any additional dramatic text at the end.

I thought I was following the election rhetoric pretty closely but this is a new one to me. Does anyone know what he is talking about?
