That's why we go with planters, Armageddon comes along and we can just move it inside.

How's your plan of letting the plants die before they mature working out for you? ;-)

I just planted this year's first attempt at tomatoes, have potato plants about 8" tall, and will be having lettuce I've grown for dinner!

Kurt, I'd love to see a gardening forum.

SWGB, mint seeds take a LONG time to germinate. Much easier to propagate from cuttings. Maybe I will bring some various cuttings to sell at the next Farmer's Market (Seaside, March 28 I think). I have chocolate mint and spearmint, and will have fig tree pips too.

Um, if EVERYBODY were to grow a garden, maybe there would be enough food for everyone, even if some hungry marauding band of outlaws made occasional raids ;-)

Also, over time it's great to have perennial food plants that make fruit/nuts every year with a lot less fuss than annual veggies. I have tried highlighted plants and had good luck as perennial food plants; non-highlighted varieties are on my list to try next:

blueberries figs olives meyer lemon and other select citrus blackberries

pecans plums loquats goumi (small berries, nitrogen fixing shrub) pawpaw

kiwi pomegranite malabar spinach artichoke ginger asparagus

There are many more, I just can't think of them at the moment.

Thanks for the info Susan. I have also heard that mint grows like kudzoo, but this is all trial and error thus far.

Any time. It likes its feet wet, and part sun. Yarrow has a similar habit here and attracts beneficial insects. Good flowers for drying and the leaves are said to staunch bleeding. Haven't ever needed to test that.

To get this thing started, I need info on how to grow Lemon trees. Started two about two years ago and don`t really know anything about them. They`re about 3 ft. and in pots. What kind of soil do they grow in?

If the pots aren't big enough it will prevent growth, not sure about soil.
