politics ≠ governance

Precisely. Fox News is not alone in this, not by a long shot, but I was thinking yesterday that their "fair and balanced" was such remarkable branding that now many of their viewers consider it to be reality.

I met a Coke Executive from India who asked me, "Is CNN more liberal and Fox more conservative?"

Was an interesting observation, I thought. When I travel, I like the BBC although they are definitely more left, it's still a different perspective of the news and how it's reported.

Politics as practiced in this country may have devolved to the point where it is little more than marketing, but politics is so much more than marketing. Politics is how a free and just society governs itself, and if we pretend that it is okay that decisions are made based on branding and consumer identification we have become too jaded to function as a democracy.

Fortunately, I think we've reached the point where most people realize when they are being manipulated.

Punzy, that is an interesting tie-in to the conversation we had last night about corporate sponsorships of local nonprofits. We've become so focused on the marketing/PR aspect of it, we've lost the sense of community development that is the true foundation of the idea. Politics on the local scale...

Our society as a whole has been bewitched by glamor and forgotten true substance. Hopefully you are correct about people realizing they have been manipulated. Sheeple, wake up!

Did you happen to pick up on the irony of these statements in light of who we recently elected as President? Symbols that depict policy, campaign slogans, posters with powerful brand images, theme music, massive big stage star studded shows with fireworks.. marketing is the core tenant of the current president and his administration. I think you're right, the country is too easily brainwashed by this stuff.

Great point. Brand Obama is arguably the most successful in recent memory. I've seen graphic designers dissect his campaign logo, with the flag and the sunrise, calling it one of the most effective images they have ever seen. He has many talented people on his side -- has had them since the beginning.

Now, it is fair to be deeply suspicious of Brand Obama. Those people watch Fox News.

Many people also recognized the brand, and still liked what they saw behind it. There is substance there, believe it or not. Whether it is the right mix of qualities for this country at this time, whether it will amount to effective leadership in the end, it is too early to tell.

One aspect of the branding is something I do cheer for, I admit. I think it is incredibly valuable, from a cultural standpoint, to so prominently see the "brand" of an intact, happy family with daughters who are clearly being raised very well. It is a model that can be admired and emulated by all families with children, but in particular African-American families. However he does as president, I think his family's presence on the world stage can do some societal good. Perhaps that is naive and idealistic -- but really, there is no more ideal role model for this sort of thing than the so-called leader of the free world.

Maybe if we had focused less on minor issues and more on important things the country wouldn't be in this current mess.
Now you are really asking for a lot from many who have no conception of what is going on, went on or will go on in America. Also, some could care less about what the issues that are important are. BTW, I always ask for Dijon on my cheeseburger. I guess that makes me an elitist, too.

I prefer Gulden's - I am a pseudo elitist.
In reality, I go for the cheaper stuff, too. My ancient taste buds aren't elitist enough to know the difference and its easier on the wallet.

I made myself an elitist burger today using among other things, Grey Poupon. I also used mushrooms, swiss cheese, bacon, and get this, French hamburger rolls! I doubt that anyone could out-elite this. Below is the photo shoot. I have never liked ketchup. I threw it in the trash. My first Dijon burger and it was delicious.

You forgot the arugula, and WTF is up with that ugly plate?;-)

I was going to use a chinet paper plate, but those are for guests. Also note that it color matches the Dijon quite well. Finally, it has a crepe recipe on it, and what could be more elitist?
