911 did not happen because the US was perceived to be weak or militarily vulnerable. 911 happened because of the fact because the US's foreign policies in the middle east are despised by some.

The U.S. takes issue with some middle eastern state / group policies as well. I'm not sure disagreements like that warrent the response we received.

Of course it did not warrant the response we received - my only point was that the attack was not because we were perceived to have a weak military but rather because of our foreign policy. And we would probably have been attacked regardless of who was in the White House.
Maybe you're right, Chickpea. I wonder what our foreign policy should be because we've 'been there' and we 'haven't been there.' We support Israel (Democracy) financially, but she never needs us militarily.....we are the biggest provider of the weapons, however.
We just set up refugee relief for Palestinians and we pour billions into other nations......now promised $1TR. Nations have pushed us away and don't want our help.
Clinton has been ridiculed as having horrible foreign policy, yet Bush was strong in the beginning and then his popularity faltered gravely.
What is Obama's foreign policy? He set the date for us to vacate Iraq. That's good. But, will we still provide them billions each year (well, not billions, since we only give Israel $100MM), but where are we headed in foreign policy?
Just out loud thoughts......I really don't know where we are headed.

Just some thoughts and while I am not necessarily advocating it, I wonder what would happen and what the opinion of us throughout the world would be: IF we pulled every military person from all bases not in the country, cut all foreign aid to all countries unless there was a quid pro quo attached to it and greatly curtailed any material goods being donated to foreign sources. Though it will never happen, I'll bet the results would be interesting.
Was it George Carlin or whats his name (not Billy Crystal......it's on the tip of my tongue) who proposed something similar to this. The results would be interesting! I think for one, we would see some vigilance from those who love hating us. Then? I believe we would begin to see some respect.
I completely agree. bin ladin himself has said this is exactly why he attacked.
Nothing warranted the attack; and IMO nothing any US president could have done would have prevented it--short of redoing the history of our policies--having said that, I think the Bush administration could have given a bit more attention to the terrorism threat. Apparently, both the CIA and the military knew there was a possibility of a hijacked plane...yet, many in the administration have repeatedly said, "No one could have imagined..."
I just hope someone is "imagining" now...
