The Origins of Political Correctness

I've read a lot of what google gave me in my search and the thing i notice time and again is that due to PC, our language is changing...over time. Some of it is harmless, but some seems to be oppressive and some just downright laughable.
Even history books are being manipulated so as not to offend people of differing religious views. The word God is being omitted, even though it is part of our country's history. We don't want to offend Muslims. I wonder if other countries have changed or omitted parts of their history so our country isn't offended. I doubt it.
I think our fear of offending anyone and everyone is eventually going to cripple our society. If everyone thinks and speaks the same way, what will we possibly be able to accomplish? Will our society be devoid of the deep thinkers, the inventors, the entrepreneurs, will our children not learn real history but what's been re-written to accomodate everyone's feelings?
Most stereotypes are simply true and real, and that's the way i intend to be. True and Real...to myself and to others. Take it however you want. You'll know where you stand with me. The older i get, the less i'm worrying about what anyone thinks of me or my opinions. I'm a poor ass white girl just trying to be an upright, honest American. That's all. I certainly don't intentionally set out to offend or hurt someone, and anyone who knows me can tell you i'm not a mean-spirited person, but if I insult someone, you can bet I mean to. And so what...i've hurt someone's feelings...my feelings have been hurt too, but guess what....I got over it.

And Bob, i don't know where you found the term PC bashing or how that makes me a racist. I do know that you harp on racism a lot in your posts, so before you label me, take a look at yourself. All white people aren't racist and all racists aren't white.

Can you give examples of what is oppressive or downright laughable? I am sincerely curious.

As far as recording of history, it's all about perception. One could say that the way history is written about slavery and the Civil War doesn't truly depict the real underlying events. The text books chosen throughout the country are vastly different from each other on many views.

Yes, our Country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and we use the word God. Do all other Countries give such leniancy, no. However, they do not have the melting pot of people we have here, nor are all tolerant of homosexuality, woman's rights, political expression, etc.

Mango, this is one of the sites that came up. You don't find some of these just ridiculous? Height challenged? residentially flexible? In my book it's short & homeless. I appreciate your views and i'm fairly certain that you and SB are smarter and have been exposed to a wider array of education than i have. I'll say it again...I'd rather be real to myself and others. If i'm not, then i'm not me. I'm not mean-spirited. I'm respectful, but i'm also cautious as to what i'll fall for and some of this stuff, i just ain't fallin' for. I treat everyone I meet the same. Anyone who wants to call me politically incorrect is welcome to do so. It's not going to change who i am. I admire and appreciate everyone for saying what they think here. Seeing other opinions and views makes me a better person and probably a little smarter. :blush:

Tootsie, it's pretty clear with post #4. My feelings aren't hurt at all.

To further clarify Post #4, it's the quote of Bob, which he felt the need to go back and edit his original post.
ah, empress of equivocation! how many posts do you need to convince all your feelings are not hurt? 20?

The link didn't work, but I assume it's an example of the idea being taken WAY too far like I mentioned.

Short and homeless are still okay words in my book - accurrate and not always highly offensive like so many of the phrases people still want to use.

Yes, I just blew seltzer through my nose. :funn:

midget = vertically challenged
fat = horizontally challenged
perverted = sexually dysfunctional
alive = temporarily metabolically abled
body odour = nondiscretionary fragrance
dishonest = ethically disoriented
wrong = differently logical
dead = living impaired
pregnant = parasitically oppressed
fired = laid off
poor = financially inept
homeless = residentially flexible
tall = lanky (henry)
garbage-man = scruff

Glad I was temporarily matabolically able to avoid a nondescretionary odor by taking a shower this morning. :rotfl:

I find it interesting that you think things will be left OUT of history books because of politicial correctness - my experience is that they make the books more honest and include more groups' stories as a result.

History - especially in textbooks - has been rather one sided and sanitized for decades and it is interesting to see the shift occuring.

I tend to agree with you on this one, SB44. For many years before the age of instant communications, history had been written by the victors of the countless wars that were fought. Whether victor or vanquished, outcomes do not determine how accounts of actual historical events are recorded any longer. They are determined, however, by the way they are interpreted by the observer. That will most likely never change.

Bob, you are absolutely incapable of hurting my feelings.

I inquired where you came up with your original post that I was beating around the 'bush.' You made an assumption and it's that simple.

You beat around the bush to explain your point. All it needed was an explanation, which you finally provided. That's pretty much it.
