here's another article i found.
The Origins of Political Correctness

I've read a lot of what google gave me in my search and the thing i notice time and again is that due to PC, our language is changing...over time. Some of it is harmless, but some seems to be oppressive and some just downright laughable.
Even history books are being manipulated so as not to offend people of differing religious views. The word God is being omitted, even though it is part of our country's history. We don't want to offend Muslims. I wonder if other countries have changed or omitted parts of their history so our country isn't offended. I doubt it.
I think our fear of offending anyone and everyone is eventually going to cripple our society. If everyone thinks and speaks the same way, what will we possibly be able to accomplish? Will our society be devoid of the deep thinkers, the inventors, the entrepreneurs, will our children not learn real history but what's been re-written to accomodate everyone's feelings?
Most stereotypes are simply true and real, and that's the way i intend to be. True and Real...to myself and to others. Take it however you want. You'll know where you stand with me. The older i get, the less i'm worrying about what anyone thinks of me or my opinions. I'm a poor ass white girl just trying to be an upright, honest American. That's all. I certainly don't intentionally set out to offend or hurt someone, and anyone who knows me can tell you i'm not a mean-spirited person, but if I insult someone, you can bet I mean to. And so what...i've hurt someone's feelings...my feelings have been hurt too, but guess what....I got over it.

And Bob, i don't know where you found the term PC bashing or how that makes me a racist. I do know that you harp on racism a lot in your posts, so before you label me, take a look at yourself. All white people aren't racist and all racists aren't white.

SSB, an absolutely compelling and wonderful post. Sometimes I am baited to the point I respond in kind and that is alright. The nature of one's self should not be diminished just because it is offended. I will respond in kind when I deem it necessary and I'm glad to see you are in that camp. Also, some never appear to read what as been said previously. It is too bad that is so but I, for one, am through repeating myself just because someone's feelings are hurt or they are not aware of what previously has been said.
Posts such as yours is what makes me think SoWal is worthwhile. I find if you can sift through all the drivel, nonsense and pure unadulterated distaste, you can learn an awful lot on this website.

I can't get involved since I don't understand it.

I don't get it either. :dunno: or at least I don't get why a few folks here have hurt feelings or feel they have been attacked.
I'm missing something here.

the subject of the thread is thought provoking, and will surely result in a range of opinions. the original poster asked for people to post their thoughts on the subject. they did. I guess they didn't state them in a politically correct manner... ???

I believe being politically correct is the same as being respectful. perhaps people weren't as respectful here as they should have been with their responses. but no one inflamed or attacked. I guess its all in how you perceive something. which is very relevant to the subject of this thread.. hmmmmm.......

Tootsie, it's pretty clear with post #4. My feelings aren't hurt at all.

To further clarify Post #4, it's the quote of Bob, which he felt the need to go back and edit his original post.

I don't think "political correctness" is a conspiracy or an attack on our way of life.

Yes, it has gotten out of hand in some cases, but the basic idea that we should be "correct" and inoffensive in our speech is a good one. IMO it started because we had just decided as a country that racism and many other "isms" were not okay. Just because you learned to say something or use a certain word as a child doesn't mean it isn't an incredibly offensive word or phrase.

For example, you are supposed to call people "Latinos" instead of "Mexicans" not because the white way of life is under attack, but because the majority of the people you refer to as "Mexican" aren't from Mexico!

And I fail to understand how not using offensive names and stereotypes stifles creativity and ideas. One would think the opposite - new words, being more technically correct than in the past, and not dismissing someone because of their race or physical characteristics would foster an environment MORE accepting of new ideas.

P.S. The Sowal kids supposedly went back to school today, so maybe people posting could act like adults.

I think if more posters (and not just on this thread) would worry less about being right and saving face than communicating a rational thought with fewer insults and venom, we would all learn a bit more about the "other side" and discover how much more we really have in common than we realize. Some people just need to learn to let things go and move on with life rather than to puff out their chests and "whip a dead horse" point to death. Continuously repeating a point won't make you more right, it just makes you more obviously stubborn.

why don't i have a thanks button anymore??:dunno:

Thanks SB and analogman for your responses and any others i haven't thanked.

I just found the history of the term interesting and i've learned some things that have opened my eyes to issues i haven't previously thought about. It'll be quite interesting to see what my daughter's history books will leave out for the sake of Political Correctness.

oh, and i guess i've been a "thanks hooor" so i can't give rep out either....

I find it interesting that you think things will be left OUT of history books because of politicial correctness - my experience is that they make the books more honest and include more groups' stories as a result.

History - especially in textbooks - has been rather one sided and sanitized for decades and it is interesting to see the shift occuring.
