I guess I just don't see what the big deal is.

We have diplomatic relations with them, we sent hundreds of athletes and our President & First Lady to the Olympics in their country, we welcome visitors, students, and immigrants from their country, we gladly trade with them............

IMO there are many more objectionable things we could be focusing on than a light display on a country's 60th anniversary.

I'm just surprised to see you so nonchalant about it. You, the gal who won't shop at Walmart. :dunno:

But, aside from trade, this is a tributary to a regime change that resulted in many deaths, malnutrition, imprisonment and execution of people who fought against the regime......
Why bother at all? It's one thing if they were hosting the Olympics currently today or we were celebrating Chinese culture or the Chinese New Year-- there is a Chinatown in NYC-- but the 60th anniversary of a government anniversary is sheer stupidity. If they couldn't of thought of anything better, than leave the red, white and blue lights on.

I guess it's a combo of 1) being tired of the xenophobic outrage du jour and 2) colored lights in a skyscraper being rather low on the ol' priority scale.

Should we have pitched a fit when they did the light display for the Wizard of Oz? The actors who played the munchkins were treated horribly you know. Toto made way more money than they did.

If you look hard enough you can find something negative about anything. Can't they just have some fun w/ the light colors and let people see something pretty? It's not even in the top 100 as to the ways we "support" the Chinese government.

xenophobic? Now I am insulted-- if that was the implication. (Not really, I could give a rat's butt what anyone thinks of my opinions) I guess I am a little tired of the liberal hippy, c'est la vie attitude about everything. Yes, it is lower on the priority list of worldly concerns, but nonetheless, still a statement being made which was newsworthy. Was Tiananmen Square lit up with red, white and blue when Obama was elected?

You don't say what you feel, only chime in when you think there is a controversy and will agree with whomever you think you want to zing a personal arrow at or think needs a devil's advocate.

I tried to research quickly re: ownership of Empire State Bldg......curious by this sudden celebration and wondering if there is now a Chinese element.....couldn't find anything, but it was for sale some time back, right? Anyone know who or what conglomerate has purchased?
