Well put, Gidget! :D

So what? There isn't a law against disapproving of cross-dressing. People should be free to teach their morals to their own kids whether you approve of them or not.

As long as the parents and kids aren't breaking any laws, it's nobody else's business. It's a slippery slope when we start letting institutions make moral decisions for everyone.[/quote]

Could you please try and explain how the way in which one chooses to dress is a "moral" issue. A person in the Transgendered comminity did not wake up and make a moral decision one morning to just buck the system and decide to make you uncomfortable. Have a little bit of respect and open mindedness, please!

The only "immoral" dress codes that I have seen has been some of the tarts on TV show in Southern California high schools, or their beltless underwear-showing male counterparts.

You two are too much

Of course we should teach tolerance. But we have to also be tolerant that others might not want to have their child exposed to certain ideas like cross dressing - especially when portrayed by such a weird looking dude (not even a teen - what's up with that?)

I am totally on the side of gay rights, etc.... but I "get" why this bothers parents.

If Jane comes home and tells her "redneck" (your words) dad about the film, he is just going to go ballistic with his views anyway which may make her very uncomfortable and confused. But if nothing is shown at school then perhaps the whole thing will just kinda be "normal" in her eyes and SHE will be the judge of how she deals with it, etc...

When adults get involved sometimes, it makes things worse for the kids. Even when they are pushing the agenda from the other side (prayer, etc...)

That's just how I see it anyway.

PS

And I don't think this is about whether cross dressing is moral or not. It is a perfect right for any individual.

I think it is about whether it is appropriate to show THAT video in schools. I know there are some here who would not approve of a film on abstinence.

It is a moral issue if one believes to "cross-dress" is right or wrong. Some people believe a transgender lifestyle is morally wrong and others believe it is fine. I respect both views. I try not to impose my morals on others.

Personally, I don't think there is anything immoral about cross-dressing and it doesn't make me uncomfortable but, I am not the moral authority of the world. We have laws to protect people from violence and discrimination. There are no laws against hate or disapproval.

People are responsible for their own morals - we can't legislate them. Mine are no more nor any less valid than yours.

Just my opinion here - I don't think "tarts on TV show in Southern California high schools, or their beltless underwear-showing male counterparts" are examples of immoral dress codes. But since you do, you must know the answer to the first question you posed above: "Could you please try and explain how the way in which one chooses to dress is a "moral" issue."

I have no problem with actually. As another example, I actually believed naturists and their families have a right NOT to wear clothes in public school if they wish...
I was simply trying to use an example that someone like you would understand at your particular level---not trying to be disrespectful here, just honest

You are right, it was a poor choice of words for my post. I was trying to compare tolerance of those who express contempt toward Southerners to those who express it toward cross-dressers. Both of those prejudices are legal and equally against my personal morals. ;-)

At my particular level?

If you weren't trying to be disrespectful, you failed.

Hopefully when a parent makes the decision to teach their own set of morals to their impressionable children, they will take into consideration that their children will one day have made up their own minds. There IS no right or wrong & it doesn't matter whether you approve or not.
