Rifles used by U.S. troops include Bible verse inscriptions - USATODAY.com Rifles used by U.S. troops include Bible verse inscriptions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Combat rifle sights used by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan carry references to Bible verses, stoking concerns about whether the inscriptions break a government rule that bars proselytizing by American troops.

Military officials said the citations don't violate the ban and they won't stop using the telescoping sights, which allow troops to pinpoint the enemy day or night.Markings on the Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight, which is standard issue to U.S. special operations forces, include "JN8:12," a reference to John 8:12: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, 'I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life,"' according to the King James version of the Bible.

The Trijicon Reflex sight is stamped with 2COR4:6, a reference to part of the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ," the King James version reads.

Photos posted on a Defense Department website show Iraqi forces training with rifles equipped with the inscribed sights.

The Defense Department is a major customer of Trijicon's. In 2009 alone, the Marine Corps signed deals worth $66 million for the company's products. Trijicon's scopes and optical devices for guns range in cost from a few hundred dollars to $13,000, according to the company's website.

Does the company say why they put those markings on the sights? And that that is actually what they reference?

Seems pretty dumb IMO - are they TRYING to give the Muslims more ammo for a holy war and alienate non-Christians? :dunno:

I would think that since we were buying $66 MILLION dollars worth of goods from them we could ask for a minor customization.

Christians manage to make a wide variety of items w/o putting bible verses on them.

This is just pucked up and they need to be removed immediately - or we don't buy their product.

Aleo's link gives much more info - along with the very valid reasons WHY it is such a dumbass idea.

Why don't these morons just start engraving cartoons of Muhammed on there and start running ads on Al-Jazeera. :bang:

Everyone says they are a good product - all I am saying is that $660 million buys us a little "customization" that doesn't give our enemies more justification for a religious war.

The US mililtary can physically outfight anyone - but we SUCK at propaganda wars - and that's what will get us a "win" in this arena.

"Should Christianity be kept out of the US military? No, Jesus isn't gay!" - Colbert on the Scripture serial numbers on scopes.

He is patenting the "handgre-bible" - they will accept Jesus into their heart, skull, and abdomen.

What would we do w/out Colbert?? Thanks, I missed that scooter.

I read about this yesterday and couldn't believe it. BUT I saw "friends" posting about it on FB who think it is "RIGHT ON!" the way to go. I'm amazed...
