What's the purpose of Aliases in online forums/article comments?

I have always noticed that Dave is "out" on this website. He always has a constructive contribution or opinion. I laugh because when I first got on here I put my name (first and last) as my user name (naive) and quickly realized that most everyone on here did not do that. Is it because people are more honest when they can voice their opinion without other people knowing who they are? Or how honest can you be when you are hiding behind an alter ego. Isn't is interesting?

Typically, it has long been message-board etiquette to use a nickname.
Facebook is the only place where I use my real name and a picture. I know it's not secure. If I go down, so do all 200 of my friends.

I find that in South Walton I'm pretty anonymous and no one mentions that incident down south. Those retirees just couldn't let it go.

I'm not in town all that often since I've got some movies coming out.
