AndrewG, what are our problems, in your opinion? And what are republicans going to do to solve them?

Besides wanting to beat the dems- what exactly are republicans saying they plan on doing if/when they take control of Congress?

End of big government, less spending, reversal of socialist policy, restoration of honor and reclaiming of civil rights are as abstract as hope and change- so pls provide something tangible.

Geo IMHO the biggest issues are runaway debt and government intrusion via regulation and taxes. Gridlock may be the best hope of slowing the former but fixing the latter will take a concentrated effort.
My greatest fear in this election is that the Republicans have not truly learned their lesson and will revert to the policies of 2001-2006 that truly gave momentum to the current crisis. I think the tea party people get it which is why the establishment is attacking them from both sides. But I am afraid that far to many establishment Republicans simply view this as a contest between them and the Democrats and thus if either is in control it brings disaster.

What would be best would be to abandon gimmicks like stimulus bills and tax holidays and begin a systematic reduction in the size of the Federal government taking care that people are injured the least possible. It will be a slow difficult process and the sooner politicians are honest with people and get started the better.

nothing to see here. move along. No politician can change anything. It's out with old crooks and in with the new. no news here.

Amen. As long as we have 50 crooks on one side, and 50 crooks on the other, they'll all have a harder time stealing from somebody.

Idlewind, sounds like you get it. But I still haven't heard which republican candidates do.

The unfortunate fact is that the only way to find out for sure is elect them and see what they do. But, putting people like Alan Boyd back in Congress is certainly not the way to improve things. While he claims to be a "moderate" he is in fact an enabler of Pelosi. I hope people will vote for Southerland and give him a chance to see if he can do better.
The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. If southerland doen't work out we can boot him out in two years.

No one seems to be talking about our trade deficit, which IMO seems to be THE long term threat. If we don't make and sell (and use American workers to do it), we're just moving increasingly devalued currency around and shopping while Rome burns. Our second biggest problem is that all the lawmakers are playing chicken and civility only is allowed to exist at Ted Stevens' funeral. I love the idea of balanced government. In practice it sounds like it will be worse before it gets better.

Right here!
WINCHESTER, VA. - The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the United States is closing this month, marking a small, sad exit for a product and company that can trace their roots to Thomas Alva Edison's innovations in the 1870s.

The remaining 200 workers at the plant here will lose their jobs.

"Now what're we going to do?" said Toby Savolainen, 49, who like many others worked for decades at the factory, making bulbs now deemed wasteful.

At least we're creating green jobs somewhere! :sarc:

We still export quite a bit. But a slow decline does seem to be exist.

So it's Obama's fault that the company that invented the CFL decades ago can't compete with a Chinese factory?

Those jobs were lost because Americans (including those workers) buy cheaper Chinese goods instead of more expensive (and better regulated) American products.

Or as my latest favorite bumper sticker says "Out of a job yet?, keep buying foreign."

Actually, the legislation that was the undoing of this factory was authored by dems in 2007, and signed into law by Bush.
