I like these as well:

It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.- Patrick Henry

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
- George Washington

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is their duty – as well as privilege and interest – of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.
- John Jay

The Christian religion is the best religion that has ever been given to man
- Thomas Jefferson

“The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.”
- Calvin Coolidge

Check your sources - Jefferson was famous for his condemnation of Christianity and the inconsistencies in the Bible.

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law. -Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. -Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814

My opinion is that there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest. The artificial structures they have built on the purest of all moral systems, for the purpose of deriving from it pence and power, revolts those who think for themselves, and who read in that system only what is really there.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Mrs. Samuel H. Smith, August, 6, 1816

I like this quote better:

If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.
Ronald Reagan

Proves Reagan was an idiot. We are a nation that allows all citizens to worship the one true God of their choosing.

You may like these quotes but that does not make them true, don't be so lazy and do a little fact checking as I did and see what you find.

This is the thing. It is okay to be religious if you are willing to let others believe in their religion. If your religion does not allow this then it will create a destructive society. It is okay to be non religious if you are willing to allow others a belief in a supernatural power. If you feel your intellect makes you superior to those that believe in the supernatural then you are also destructive to society. The forefathers of the constitution used words like self evident rather than God's purpose. Prayer should be private between you and your beliefs. I grew up in a Baptist church but I have always wondered why prayer is spoken out loud. There seems to be elements of religion that is insincere just like politicians...

I agree with you. Religion is between you and your maker. I don't want anyone telling me how to worship and I don't tell anyone how they have to worship or even that they must worship. But I want the same privilege that is granted others, that I be allowed to worship as I choose. And I don't like people rewriting history because they do not like what it says.
Back to the point of the thread, if Mr. Perry wants to have a gospel meeting, pray to Jesus and limit participation to those who believe like him it is his business. If you are for religious liberty you must defend the rights of everyone, even those you do not agree with.

I don't have a problem with Perry going to a prayer rally (or any other reasonable religious event), I have a problem with the Governor holding an exclusive prayer rally, publicizing it as the Governor, possibly using public funds, and inviting other governors.

I also don't have a problem with any elected official saying they are religious, attending services, or leading a prayer in times or stress or tragedy.

It's the fact that the highest government office/official in the state is excluding, denigrating, and hoping to convert other religions that is the problem.

It depends. If I get the sense that his faith is a more primary obligation than his official duties then I believe that person is unqualified to hold office. Obama claims to be a man of faith. Maybe he really is, maybe not, but it doesn't seem to be at the core of his decision making process, unlike our previous president.
