"A man walks through the crowd at the Ground Zero protest and is mistaken as a Muslim. The crowd turns on him and confronts him. The man in the blue hard hat calls him a coward and tries to fight him. The tall man who I think was one of the organizers tried to get between the two men. Later I caught up with the man who's name is Kenny. He is a Union carpenter who works at Ground Zero. We discussed what a scary moment that was for him. I told him that I hoped it did not ruin his day."

I say even if he was a Muslim so what? Should Muslims not take a stroll in the vicinity of "GZ" as some (not me) like to call it? What a bunch of despicable morons!

I thought this was a community center and now you tell us that they pray there. oh boy.

My understanding is that there has been a mosque there for a long time. Very uneventful.

And now that the people who own the mosque are wanting to expand it to include a community center that there is outrage about a mosque.

Mosque was already there in the vicinity of 9-11. And the guy who runs it was so respected that he has appeared on Fox News framed as a moderate before he was framed as an extremist and oh, BTW-

he represents the US government in reaching out to Muslims in other parts of the world to denounce radicalism/extremism.

These are important facts to consider, no?

The Muslim community center would actually probably be more in line with the family values plank of the Republican platform than the Manhattan strip clubs located a similar distance from the WTC site.

What I have read all along is that it, Cordoba House (later named Park51), is to be a community center similar to others in Manhattan, such as the 92nd Street YMCA. It is to have a good-sized Muslim worship space along with other potential activities such as sports areas, child care, restaurant, performing arts center ....

It appears that when it needed local government approval from community boards, preservation commissions, etc the votes were unanimous in favor of it.

The map below is of lower Manhattan (1997). It shows Burlington Coat Factory (site to be developed), the Strip Club Beachmouse referenced, and a Mosque further north established in 1970.

This should never have been politicized imo.

Yes, a muslim jersey (metaphorically speaking). Just as the mob of Cubs fans ridicule the lone Cards fan in the stands the people in the video thought the guy was a Muslim based on his appearance- not based on the content of his character. So again, I ask-
What do you think it was about his appearance that led so many to mistakenly believe he was a Muslim? Mango, you said he was wearing a football cap with a logo, a Puerto Rican Necklace and white athletic jersey. So if it wasn't his attire then suddenly it becomes more plausible that it was a racial thing (I am not saying it was). But an even better question-
Let's say the guy is a Muslim. Does that make it acceptable for the folks in the video to behave the way they did?

IMHO, the only thing more tragic than almost 4,000 people losing their lives because some brainwashed extremists sought the company of virgins is realizing that a majority of our citizens seem okay with it that in the biggest city in America in broad daylight in front of police officers and the media that someone could be in physical danger because of their religious beliefs.

You are making assumptions that Kenny (if that is his real name) was scared, that he wasn't an infiltrator, that Americans in broad daylight allowed this......This thread reminds me of that scene from Men in Black where Will Smith is tested on what he saw and why he shot at what. This was a peaceful protest considering that both sides of the issue were represented. What actually happened was apologies were made to each other, but you don't see that.

Yes, among the MANY functions of the multi-faith community and cultural center is space for people to pray.

There's also a gym, a restaurant, a swimming pool, a performing arts center, culinary school, child care center .................
That's why the project will provide 150 full time and 500 part time jobs and take 3 years to build (so the whole opening on Sept 11, 2011 people keep getting upset about is just more propaganda).
The mayor supports it, the proposal passed the neighborhood council 29-1, and the police commissioner has no security concerns.
And while you are flipping out, there's a mosque a block away that was built BEFORE the WTC towers. Apparently after 40 years, folks are now finding that one offensive too. :sarc:
Folks are against a proposed 100 Million dollar building that could be 13 stories. It would be the most expensive mosque/center ever built in NYC. New Yorkers are not anti-Islam as evidenced by never protesting any of the 140 mosques in NYC. They seem to take issue with a building that has the potential to be a vector of victory at the site of one of Islamic terrorist's most horrific acts in history. People are concerned where they will be getting all this funding. They state they will be soliciting Muslim -Americans, but this far, they have only risen a measly $18,000. Many mosques are funded by Arab Countries.

It seems the opponents are being criticized, however, most Manhattanites are for the Center, but there is a large faction of the Muslim Community that is opposed to it.

You say I assume "Kenny" is scared or that he isn't an infiltrator. I believe it to be irrelevant if Kenny is scared or if he is an infiltrator so, no- these assumptions haven't crossed my mind.

But since you mention assumptions- I read your article and have no reason to believe it references the same situation/the same parties in the video and am not sure why you would assume it does.

If there was an apology made by the aggressor in the video I would assume it was- "Sorry, I thought you were a Muslim."

Which is my point- the video shows Americans acting kinda crazy because they believe someone is a Muslim.

I saw Men in Black. Not fully with you on how that scene is like the one in the video because we're not stereotyping the folks in the video as being anti-Muslim. They are behaving like they are.

There are a whole lot of megachurches sprouting up across the country. And there are a whole lot of gas stations and liquor stores funded by Arabs.

It seems the opponents are being criticized, however, most Manhattanites are for the Center, but it is actually the Muslim Community that is opposed to it.

Here are some quotes from prominent Muslim/Americans:
I would put them here, but for some reason I can not.

We've seen a whole lot of prominent people of all nationalities/religions oppose things like abolition, women's suffrage, etc. etc.

I wish we would build our own vector of victory in Lower Manhattan-
the world's tallest most grand building at the site of the towers so that any other structure funded and built by any religion, nationality or corporation would pale in comparison.

Part of this issue is that we still have a hole in the ground 10 years later.

Here's the good news for folks who oppose it. I genuinely believe that since this was made out to be such a huge issue that the folks who seek to build it will no longer want to because it is pretty much tainted- and if it isn't tainted yet it will be soon. Right, wrong or indifferent- I don't think it's gonna happen.

The only point that I was trying to make was not everything is as it looks and I consider despicable a strong adjective about a situation presented when all the facts are not considered; or you only see a piece of the whole of a subject you disagree about. That is all I have to say further on the subject.

Sorry Alicia, I didn't give you credit for the baby hamster post- thanks.

I guess to stay on topic I would say that we should stick to the constitution and the laws that are in place.
We may not like the laws (I would love to fly down 30A), but if they are just and not manipulated they benefit all of us because they are the deciding factor.

All Christians are not abortion clinic bombers and all muslims are not terrorists.

Nothing gets settled in a heated battle anyway- it's always best to chill and then proceed rationally.

Wait, what am I thinking, that would cause the media to lose employment as no one would want to watch a peaceful rational discussion. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ:idontno:

Mango that animation of beatin a dead horse is funny.
It reminds me of traveling with my second husband.
We passed a bloated dead horse on the side of the road and looking back I now realize that was the mascot of our marriage.
Nothing got accomplished because the same subjects repeatedly were discussed, but nothing ever moved forward from them.
I cannot think of one positive accomplishment that racism ever contributed to, but I can think of many lives that have been destroyed by it.
Racism is a bloated dead horse that stinks and people that make decisions from that viewpoint prefer the stench of death to the wheels of progress.
I'm still trying to figure out what a dead horse was doing on the side of the road.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Ground Zero Mosque Vote - WSJ.com
The simple fact is this building is private property, and the owners have a right to use the building as a house of worship.

"The government has no right whatsoever to deny that right ? and if it were tried, the courts would almost certainly strike it down as a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Whatever you may think of the proposed mosque and community center, lost in the heat of the debate has been a basic question ? should government attempt to deny private citizens the right to build a house of worship on private property based on their particular religion? That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here. This nation was founded on the principle that the government must never choose between religions, or favor one over another.

I think Mayor Bloomberg has it right. I am amazed that so many who in other venues stand for private property rights and the right to choose to worship or not, in this particular venue, feel differently.

and lost in all the name calling, is something that may prove to be much more detrimental to our effort in the so-called war on terror:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/22/opinion/22rich.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=frank rich&st=cse
Here?s what?s been lost in all the screaming. The prime movers in the campaign against the ?ground zero mosque? just happen to be among the last cheerleaders for America?s nine-year war in Afghanistan. The wrecking ball they?re wielding is not merely pounding Park51, as the project is known, but is demolishing America?s already frail support for that war, which is dedicated to nation-building in a nation whose most conspicuous asset besides opium is actual mosques.

So virulent is the Islamophobic hysteria of the neocon and Fox News right ? abetted by the useful idiocy of the Anti-Defamation League, Harry Reid and other cowed Democrats ? that it has also rendered Gen. David Petraeus?s last-ditch counterinsurgency strategy for fighting the war inoperative. How do you win Muslim hearts and minds in Kandahar when you are calling Muslims every filthy name in the book in New York?

I cannot imagine why Bloomberg would support an Islamic center. Hmmm, let me think.... ah, ha!

"The company (Bloomberg's) has also been developing an Islamic finance portal (in the Middle East), which Mr Linnington said would be helped by having more people on the ground building relationships.

Particularly since the meltdown of the western capitalist system, there has been an increasingly large focus on the virtues of Islamic finance,? he said. ?Today, there is no one single provider of information that caters to the Islamic finance market. So by Bloomberg being here, we are in the process of building out an Islamic finance product. We are very confident that we can build a product that meets the needs of the market right now.? (full story)

BTW, it isn't Islam that scares people so much as it is extreme Muslims. From this morning's news:
Afghan girls fall ill after apparent gas poisoning
Wed Aug 25, 9:45 am ET
KABUL (Reuters) ? About 40 schoolgirls became ill and were taken to hospital after a suspected gas poisoning in the Afghan capital Wednesday, another apparent attack by hardline Islamists opposed to female education.

The Taliban banned education for girls during their Afghan rule from 1996-2001, but have condemned similar attacks in the past. They have, however, set fire to dozens of schools, threatened teachers and even attacked schoolgirls in rural areas.

More reasons why Americans are upset: just reported yesterday by the AP press and posted on MSNBC, Obama will spend millions of US taxpayer dollars on restoring historic sites including mosques in 55 nations.

""The fund has demonstrated America's respect for the world's cultural heritage," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said last month in announcing the 2010 projects." (full story)

How about this news from the New York Post yesterday? Wonder why people in NY ARE upset?
HS test 'slams' Christianity, lauds Islam
By YOAV GONEN Education Reporter
State testmakers played favorites when quizzing high-schoolers on world religions -- giving Islam and Buddhism the kid-gloves treatment while socking it to Christianity, critics say.

Teachers complain that the reading selections from the Regents exam in global history and geography given last week featured glowing passages pertaining to Muslim society but much more critical essay excerpts on the subject of Christianity.

"There should have been a little balance in there," said one Brooklyn teacher who administered the exam but did not want to be identified.

"To me, this was offensive because it's just so inappropriate and the timing of it was piss-poor," he added, referring to the debate over the plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero.

..."I can see why some people might see these questions as skewed," said Mark MacWilliams, a religious-studies professor at St. Lawrence University in upstate Canton. "Why does the exam seem to have only documents that portray Islam as a religion of peace, civilization and refinement, while it includes documents about Christianity that show it was anything but peaceful in the Spanish conquest of the Americas?"...

Had enough? How about MSNBC host calling all protesters of the mosque at world trade towers, "frustrated whiteys" and "aryians?"

Believe it or not, at 51:57 marker he suggests that everyone has bigger fish to fry and that they should go after "Obama and his lieutenants running around the hills of Afghanistan."
