I've seen and read, The Help. One of my children asked, "were things really that bad?" My reply was, the movie and book were both great. But IMHO, it was sugar coated. Great book and movie.

I've also seen My Week With Marilyn. Loved it! Of course, I'm a huge Marilyn Monroe fan. Throw in Lawrence Olivier, before he was a Sir, and Michelle Williams as the blonde bombshell...it was magic! It won't take home Best Movie. It's certainly worth watching, maybe more than once!

Haven't seen Hangover 2 or Hugo. I'll put that those on hubby's list to buy.

I downloaded the first few chapters of The Help on my Kindle. Made me feel uncomfortable. But when I saw the movie, I realized that beyond the first few chapters of the book, the movie makes strong statements against the discrimination that was not on the radar back when I was growing up. The Help is strong, as are the actresses Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Emma Stone.

Hugo is a movie you have to see on the big screen, and in 3D. It's a very visual experience. The Decedents, on the other hand, is probably a video CD movie. It's very human and real, which is both its good points and its bad points.

Just saw Descendents - liked it a lot - but fine for home watching.

So far, my vote is The Help. Loved the book & movie. The acting was excellent.

OH, I liked Midnight in Paris too! Not best pic material, imo, but really enjoyed it.

So I have seen 5 of the nominated movies which is a LOT for me!

see all nominations:

Oscars

Hangover 2 was nominated? Watched it with Blaine and Will the other night (Kate was out- whew). I can only see movies like that once- yes, laughed hard, but oh my so horrific on many levels! I clench my hands the entire time screaming DON'T DO THAT!!!!! If it is nominated, it is also the only Oscar nominated movie I have seen, which says to much about how I need to make some more time to watch movies (and read).

Is Downton Abbey nominated for an Oscar? I managed to watch every episode of Season 1 and 2 this weekend. I need new eyeballs.

Come to Marie's Bistro tonight! They are opening up on Sunday for the Oscars, and the Rep is going to be there making the 2012 season announcement and Prom King and Queen candidate announcements- fun starts at 5:30.

Neither was nominated.

I wish I were in town. I'd love to go to the Marie's party.

The talking heads this AM were predicting that The Artist will win best film, best actor, and best director, and that Viola Davis will win best actress (over Meryl Streep who hasn't won since 1982).

We'll get that after we watch the DVDs we have. Thanks for the rec! Tonight I want to watch Marilyn.

EDIT: We've been watching "The Artist" for about 15 minutes. I think I'm gonna claw my eyeballs out. Maybe we're not sophisticated enough to appreciate this movie.

In my experience, that means it's going to win.....

I...rest...my...case.

I historically like artsy-indie-foreign films. But I really don't have a desire to see "the artist" . I don't know why! It just doesn't appeal to me!

Want to see Moneyball, Artist, Descendents, and Iron Lady (though a little Streep goes a long way IMO).

Didn't like the book "The Help", but might see the movie.

I haven't seen Bridesmaids, but all of the clips and behavior of the actresses when they presented really made me wonder why it was up for an Oscar. Vulgar and tacky.
