In SoWal, we're in the middle of the flight paths of Eglin and Tyndall. We do enjoy seeing them make their turns here. Not a bother. Eglin usually turns back to return East in SoWal. Tyndall usually heads East and South. (nephew is F-15 pilot and has been in the area a time or two.)

After all these years I'm suddenly in a flight path. I can handle the planes it the copters that fly low, very loud and make things rattle.

"The public has to be the eyes and ears here," Schumer said yesterday. "And they will be, because when they're frustrated they'll call."

Like I said, it used to be a nice quiet place to live. I wouldn't mind working there. I've worked in a huge cocktail lounge @ JFK, NYC. Sound proof ceiling to floor windows allowed us to see take offs. Awesome!!!

I've also worked at smaller private airport locally, in the airport mgr's office. Boring....

This has very little relevance to this thread, but it brought back a memory.

My brother used to live in Valparaiso, two streets in from Eglin's boundary - and right under the approach to the runway. It gets LOUD there, regularly. Especially in the afternoons, when many of the daytime flights are coming back in.

In the early 80s, I attended OWC in Niceville. One semester, I took a night class in Niceville and would go to my brother's house between my noon class and my night class.

Trying to watch afternoon soap operas (pre-SoapNet, pre-Tivo) at his house was a major pain in the arse. You'd be right at a cliffhanger, and all of a sudden, BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. :pissed:

In 'Nole's case it was ordinary runway noise, but Eglin AFB is a major weapons testing and development center in addition to the 'dummy' bombs the pilots will drop out in the wilds as part of ongoing training.

Some cloudy (but not too rainy) day here, check out the Air Force Armnament museum just north of Shalimar for a look at weapons development past and present in the area.

Uh...yea...they do..all the time... Eglin is the only training for EOD (explosive ordinance detonation) and is also where the MOAB (mother of all bombs created for the current war) was built and tested. (what Navarre ever did to us I havent figured out yet. I personally would have tested the little multi-million dollar jewel in the area of the world that it was most needed at that time)

If you look at my license plate bracket, on it you will find, "Jet Noise is the Sound of Freedom" and I firmly believe it. The noise from air traffic in SoWal is quite bearable when you consider all the possible alternatives you could have if it were not present. On top of that, the aircraft activity along the seashore is fun to watch and not annoying since at night it is almost non existent. Also, the Pelicans continuously put on their own "air show" which is wonderful to watch.

Hi beachmouse, where is Bluewater Bay? I tried to map it w/no luck.

I've lived her for more than 30 years. For more than 25 all we heard were the church bells, the sounds of nature (cat/squirrel fights & thunderstorms being my fav), and the distant sound Fire Island ferries when I woke up each morning. I sit out on the porch with my coffee and listen to the birds, ferries and the damn landscapers. I recently began using a push mower!!! Why waste more gas?

BTW-I always felt thats why theres so many wierdos out west due to all those bombs they tested back in the 50's.

It's the area just east of Niceville and directly north of the Mid Bay Bridge to Destin- a good-sized planned community. We're about 1/4 mile from Eglin reservation on two sides, and not too far from the EOD school.
