I'm not liking this season as much as I have the previous ones. Not wild about the couples idea. I do love me some Bob, though!

For me it's more about their stories and to see what they look like in the end.

I agree with that. Just not getting into the couples thing. I still like the show though. Some of the other segments have just been more compelling to me. I am intrigued by the divorced couple and the guy /girl couple that are best friends.

I ususallly tune in toward the end of the season...I love the tranformations too. I may start watching since there's little else on at the moment.

That's just it, with not much else on, it seemed like a good idea. I've just borrowed the first season of Flight of the Conchords  from a friend, so maybe that will help, too!

He really is cute. I said last night he sounds a bit like a preacher.

He totally does. He's very passionate. I would love to have him as a trainer. Gillian scares me a wee bit.

By chance, I saw the show last week. I watched the show last season, and don't like it as a competition. I think the prize is something like a million $, but each of the contestants, when voted off the show, are never disappointed about losing the money. They are disappointed that they will no longer be surrounded by the incredibly positive support system of the other people. Watching these people go from not believing in themselves, to a state where they are extremely proud of their accomplishments, is empowering, even for the viewing audience.

BTW, peapod, I had the same question about the men. My guess is that the show makes them do it, so that both they, and the audience can really see the transformation. I've yet to see a show where they didn't lose weight, so I'm sure it also helps in building their self esteem.

We are. Mr. Pod always asks--at every weigh-in:roll:--why the men take their shirts off. :yikes:
The shirts are made of stuff that weighs more than not wearing a shirt.

Gillian scares the begeebers out of me! A couple of seasons ago, she got mad at one of the men and pulled HER shirt off and stormed out. We all looked at each other and nearly peed ourselves laughing after that.

I can't watch that show anymore. It makes me crave brownies.

I read recently that there is only an infintismal success rate. Most of the contestants gain most of the weight back. In order to lose 16 pounds in a weigh-in, they will sit in a sauna for hours and drink no fluids. They are ridiculously unhealthy in their eating habits while they are there. It's the lesser of two evils for them--eat a lot of junk (old lifestyle) or have a half a crouton with a thimble full of broth to lose weight on t.v...

I find this statement, silly. Isn't it ridiculously unhealthy eating habits which contributed to there weight in the first place? Sometimes, you have to make the sacrifice of eating the the low cal foods to get to the desired weight. Their exercise routine seems to be the one thing that really changes from zero to 100 by going onto the show. IMO, exercise will play a more important role than choosing between a bleeched enriched flour tortilla and a corn tortilla, which has about 1/10 the calories. If they are exercising often, they will build muscle, which requires more calories than fat, but also burns more. Muscle also weighs more than fat, and that is the number one reason why I think the show, focusing on weight, gives people a bad goal -- weight loss, rather than fat loss. Muscle mass doesn't cause heart disease. Fat mass does.
