At the feeder today

This morning is an active time at the bird feeder.
At the same time, on my lawn and around the feeder;
blue jays, morning doves, ground doves, cardinals, chipping sparrows, white throated sparrows, chickadees, red wing black birds, grackles, hairy woodpecker, mockingbirds, rufus sided towhees, brown thrashers, and finally a bird hawk that send them all into the cover!

Betty loved the post and so did I. We're both ready to come home and see all our birds.

I put out about 8 pounds of safflower seed a week for the cardinals, but the doves manage to get most of it. Squirrels love it, but the pole is too slick:rofl:

I put out a bird feeder at our home in Seagrove, and I have never seen a bird there. Am I feeding them the wrong thing? I having a mix that's mostly sunflower seeds. They gobble that stuff up back in Georgia, but not here. I figured that it was because the birds have so many natural resources here.

in cincinnati, the snow is covering the ground feeder and the heated birdbath has kicked into high gear. we have about 2 dozen cardinals, woodpeckers, titmice, chickadees, goldfinches, purple finches, robins, grackles, blue jays, mourning doves, sparrows, carolina wrens, and more!! [we also have a beautiful hawk who shows up once or twice a day - i have never seen him catch anything]. i am going to have to go out and clear off a place to sprinkle some black oil sunflower and cracked corn - they freak out when it all gets covered by the snow. my cats think we have "catfeeders" instead of birdfeeders, and sit in hte windows watching for hours. 6-8 MORE inches forecast through tomorrow - a total of 12!! we are heading to seagrove on sunday - my neighbor will attend to the birds!!

gotta put them in a place where the birds can fly into easily with no fear of somthing eating them. Look at the placement, better out in the open.

Plus you hafta do something about the damn squirrels (at least around here)

when the hawk first showed up, i looked up info on the audubon website. the birds actually do better if they have some bushes/scrub close by - the hawk can't follow them into it. out in hte middle of a yard, they have to fly for cover and the hawk can get them. we actually have the songbirds fly into the bushes about 5 feet from the feeder, and they and the hawk just look at each other - the hawk finally gives up and goes elsewhere. one day he came down and sat on hte picket fence and just stared at the little guys about 5 feet away. the audubon info said that the hawk probably can't catch the songbirds unless they are sick or old (the circle of life!)- so i have kind of calmed down about having him come here. and he is quite beautiful himself!

the squirrels (tree rats) have their own wildlife feeder - (galvanized) - which they pretty much stick to. and are pretty good about sharing with some of the groundfeeding birds. i don't mind the squirrels as long as they don't become destructive - like tearing apart feeders. we have 2 "squirrel proof" metal feeders with the weighted openings, and they are really great. and the squirrels don't like suet or thistle (niger), so we are good to go.

Had ours too close to the bushes(?), they didn't use it, talked to the bird feed store, moved it and now they are all over it. Hawks are not an issue here for whatever reason.

Anyway, sure is funn to see them there, especially when it is cold and they are all fluffed up.
