On a weird note and a story in which I will explain later, my mom and dad came home a few years ago to find our former next door neighbor in our home and later learned that he had gone through some things in the house, like bank statements and credit card bills. At the time he used the excuse that one of us had left the dog out roaming around the subdivision and he simply came in through the garage door to put her back in the house, of course I got the blame for it at the time...well long story short this guy is Schizo and had intruded into other neighbor's homes and even killed a dog and later threatened my dad with a gun when approached about it. I will have to explain this juicy story later tonight when I return from Target--fun :shock:
Sorry to read that, LL. I would freak out, and if I woke up during it, you may be reading the obituary of the would be thief or potential murderer who threatend my life, when he entered my home. That would be the story if I did not have good guard dogs inside my house. They always sleep between the door and me, and I would feel sorry for the burglerer who decided to take the chance to break into my house. He would probably kill himself trying to escape the dogs, and if he just injured himself, I may have to bopp him on the head to prevent a potential lawsuit. 
Oh, LL, it literally gives me a sick feeling just reading the story. I'm so sorry for what happened, but, as you say, there is much to be thankful for.Landlocked said:

LL, that's awful! So glad your family didn't get harmed, but it will scar them for a while - in our case, we still haven't recovered. One of the sad things for us was that when it happened (Friday night), my husband couldn't get on a flight out of Tokyo until Sunday. He called every few hours crying because he felt so bad for us because we were so traumatized.
If you don't believe in guns, at least sleep with a cell phone by you bed so if burglars cut the phone line (a common M.O. in our town to disable the burglar alarm from calling the police), at least you have some way to call for help.
Good advice about the cell phone BR. I had always thought I would just pretend to sleep in that case and let them take what they want. But, I guess I do not know how I would react...especially is woken from a deep sleep.
