Catholic Church Emerges as Key Player in Legislative Battle - WSJ.com Catholic Church Emerges as Key Player in Legislative Battle

By PETER WALLSTEN

Injecting itself aggressively into the health-care debate, the Roman Catholic Church in America has emerged as a major political force with the potential to upend a key piece of President Barack Obama's agenda.

Behind-the-scenes lobbying, coupled with a grassroots mobilization of Catholic churches across the country, led the House Saturday to pass an amendment to its health-care bill barring anyone who receives a new tax credit from enrolling in a plan that covers abortion, a once-unthinkable event in Democrat-dominated Washington.

The restriction would still have to be accepted by the Senate, where it will likely face a tough fight. The issue could sink the larger health legislation if the chambers fail to reach agreement, or if any consensus language leads supporters to defect.......this is unthinkable intervention in government

I know it's a political hot potato, but why are they putting restrictions on medical care already?

I'm not Catholic, and I might need that procedure to save my life someday........ let's say when I'm married and really want that baby, but it ISN'T POSSIBLE. Not because I'm some breezy kneed ho like they want to make out. Sucks to be me trying to get medical care to save my life.

Let me remind the knee jerk Catholic haters out there that without church lobbying you might not have a passed house bill right now. It sounds to me like the Catholic effort is consistent with President Obama's. "I laid out a very simple principle, which is this is a health care bill, not an abortion bill," Obama said. "And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions,". Do you really want to let a squabble between the far left and far right sink the entire effort? If so, stay tuned because from what I see on the news it is coming down the pike in the Senate.

PATHETIC!

time to remove tax exemption status? do you have a clue the advantages of this? fact is the commercial construction industry as we speak would have fallen like residential if it wasnt for that exemption. but your right, ACORN deserves it-please. talk about blinded by the light

dis-organized religion? did olby teach you that one?

im no church-goer, but i know that churches and those who frequent them do more for the poor and oppressed than any liberal could ever.

if you dont agree with them you want to shut them down. thats right out of the liberal handbook....
