BR--I have the same luck. I just buy lots of new ones every year. I'm interested in LED ones though.
I've noticed every time I start to talk about doing lights outside, everyone always changes the subject. Poor Sunkist will probably end up being my assistant again this year. I don't plan to do too much outside..I don't have the energy any more.
Anyhoo, today I bought some $1 giant wooden snowflakes. I'm gonna paint and glitter them for the biggest tree. So it looks like it might be a white theme tree. I've got lots of white ornaments already. I thought about spraying some pine cones white too. Thoughts, suggestions?
We have a reproduction Louisiana plantation house, so we go traditional. Lighted garland draped on the second floor gallery, lighted garland hung around the front door, and lights on the topiaries by the front door (which I decorated in orange lights last night after the Gators' win ).

I'm kind of out of steam for indoor decorations. I might do a simple tree this year -- green lights (to be "green" ;-)) on the tree with our collection of sterling silver balls from NM. And throw some fresh garland on the stairrail, the mantles, and the large pieces of furniture.

I like your white theme. Anything natural from your yard would be good -- just look at Smith & Hawken. Boxwood is great -- you can spray it, make wreaths with it, topiaries, etc.

I like the giant ornaments, too. They look great lit and hung randomly from trees in your yard.

We bought this light tester a few years ago and it works like a charm. This one os for mini lights, but they have them for the larger lights. Well worth the investment. I don't think we paid more than $20 for ours. Ace Hardware has them. They also have inexpensive laser testers, but I haven't used them, just the gun. These guns have multiple applications- like using on it anyone who gives you grief during the holidays and grinches.

New patented technology brings you an easy-to-use system for detecting and repairing those miniature light sets that cause you so much grief each year. A built-in continuity detector, with audible tone, helps locate the source of the power interruption. Plug light set into Repair Gun and squeeze the trigger to send a pulse through the defective light set. This fixes the circuit, allowing the current to flow.

DD, I've always loved trees with lots of ribbons and bows, especially red, since it shows up so nicely on green. I usually make my own. Our first tree was like that and we still talk about it.

My first year out of college and on my own, I had a cranberry/popcorn decorated tree with a red scarf tied on top. I loved that little tree!
For our first tree when hubby and I got married as undergrads at Tulane, we bought a 12 inch pre-lit tree for a dollar from Schwegman's in NOLA.

LED lights seem to work much better due to the more durable "element". In a traditional bulb the element is loose inside the glass and usually all the shaking and pulling trying to untangle them shakes the element loose. LED's element is encased in glass or plastic.

Careful with natural garland, it's a fire hazard. Make sure to keep it moist by spraying it 2-3 times per day with a spray bottle.

Why not make a bunch of ornament with Jackson and let it be "his" tree. I have some funn ideas that are easy and look good....not like completely like a child made them. ;-)Years of teaching in a classroom gave me some success in homemade ornament making. Most are really cheap and chid friendly.

Shelly's story reminds me of mine and Mike's first tree...we were in RocKhill SC living together...we went into the woods and cut down a tiny pine tree with a steak knife. We put it in the living room and I made aluminum foil balls to hang on it...I think we also strung cranberries and popcorn together to make a garland....maybe this was the begining of the end??? :dunno::D
It is, really, a good memory.

I plan on making lots and lots of organic ornaments this year....:D found objects, so to speak! Treasures

Cut the tree with a steak knife!!! Priceless! And I know what your found treasure's are!!

Also loved Shelly's story!

Our trees are decorated in a wide variety of ornaments - ornaments from travels, stuff my brother and I made as kids, gifts, misc items that we decided made good christmas ornaments over the years, and traditional ornaments that have been in the family for decades.

Very amusing when you have to tell someone to put down their bourbon so they can hang their ancient "baby's first x-mas" ornament on the tree! :D

We have some great little trees in our front yard for ornaments. I went to look at buying some of the large ornaments for them. Holy Cow! They are expensive! :yikes: Anyone have any suggestions for making the large ornaments out of everyday CHEAP things?? :dunno:

Old soccer, basket, or kick balls covered in alumnium foil? Roll in glue and glitter? Paper mache a balloon and then decorate the shell.
