Is this the church that has the cute choir, but they all sing flat?
There are some good services on TV here, but I don't tune in. If I don't go to church on Sunday AM, I don't particularly want to watch it on TV either........usually going for some groovy music and/or a stupid movie at that point.

I grew up I'm Chicago which has a huge religious population. Sure, there were masses on TV but it was on the "UHF" channels-not on NBC all morning.

Interesting what you said about the atheist broadcast. But my question isn't as much about the opposite of religious programming as much as it is about a different religion.

I suspect that the muslim prayer service would be controversial in an area like ours whereas god fearing real Americans would just change the channel on the atheist message.

Most Muslims wouldn't broadcast the service anyway as it falls under the graven images sin. ;-)

Maybe this doesn't seem odd to locals or folks native to small towns. But as a transplant I find it interesting that the local NBC affiliate's Sunday morning lineup consists of The Living Word presented by the Springfield Community Church followed by Meet the Press and then a full mass (not sure who produces this).

If you've lived in the South for very long, you'd be used to this, My wife and I used to tune in to Ernest Angley (alleged 'Faith Healer') just to watch the theatrics of the healing and to hear him mispronounce words. If you watched the show for very long, you began to recognize some of the folks being healed.

Our favorite was a show after a 'healed' patron proceeded to collapse immediately after being 'healed'. Earnest defended his show, insisting that after all, they had called an 'amalance' after the person collapsed. The young lady discussing it with him said 1 phrase over and over again; "yes, that's right'. Phonetically, it was "yay-ess, that's rite" (with a very long i).

Right here!
Geo - I've always seen Church TV - anywhere I've lived, including Birmingham and other smaller cities. I don't care to watch them, but I have tuned in a time or two, or accidently, just for the entertainment/shock factor. Remember Ernest Angely? Tammy and Jim? oh my goodness - those were indeed bizarre shows. the lives and stories behind the scenes were even more bizarre.

On the other hand, Mass is offered on TV everywhere. Not sure why because I'm pretty sure its a sin to physically miss mass - unless you are deathly ill or on vacation (I'm a big sinner). But, maybe its just for those Catholics who like to watch a mass on TV in addition. You can find mass on tv every day in some places. I do not think the mass on tv is intended to save you, heal you or take your money. well, maybe they want your money - I've never really watched mass on TV except midnight mass from St Peter's on Christmas Eve.

Sunday morning church on TV - its been around forever. Good for those who like to tune in with their coffee in their PJs and not have to leave the house. I reckon.

Ditto - I remember being a kid in Denver and always being bummed - saturday morning cartoons were great, sunday mass on every channel always sucked. (Of course, I usually ended outside instead on sundays so really it was a good thing.)

I don't believe physically missing church is considered wrong, just missing mass. One of the many reasons these services are televised by their respective churches.

I think there have always been a variety of protestant services broadcast on local tv and radio stations on Sunday mornings, for years. I haven't seen a local TV station in many years so I don't know much about the current religious programming on local stations.

Some day we may see American Muslim culture, religion and people all around and within our communities - perhaps on TV as well..

believe me I have a mother who will tell you that missing mass is a sin and that you cannot receive the eucharist on TV. and a priest brother who will tell you the same but he isn't nearly as worried about it (on my behalf) than the Mother of the Priest.:D

we have our American Catholics (you, me), and our Real Holy Catholics (mom).

There are some places in the US like Los Angeles and Detroit where the local Muslim population is large and well-known enough that people wouldn't really bat an eye at that kind of weekly broadcast. The issue for broadcast tv would be that Friday is the big prayers and services day of the week, and weekday programming commitments limit when you could put something like that on the air. Equal access for different faiths is one thing; bumping around Good Morning America or, even, worse General Hospital into a different time slot is another.

Tootsie, I was repeating what SWGB said in this thread, post #3, and I was answering a question Geo had asked me awhile back so I repeated the question cause it was similar to this thread. It would be better to address things I say to you instead of jumping in when I address other people. Your observations and mine are different. I prefer my words to stand as they are and not filtered through your understanding of what I am saying. Some people have hard feelings along with disagreements and remove friend requests. I can disagree with you, not have hard feelings, and not remove friend requests. If the shoe did not fit in the initial post-don't wear it. Cinderella

BH, I'm sorry. I am still confused and have no idea what any of this means and I'm not sure I need to. let's just leave it.
