There are a lot of truly heinous and reprehensible things I could do that would technically save lives.

Those things would also violate every law and principle our country was founded upon.

The same laws and principles the terrorists say we cannot uphold while defeating them.

Death toll is not the sole indicator of success. My family tree has invested lives and money making sure that America wins.

That's the weakest most simple-minded argument I've ever heard. American's lives could be saved by warrantless searches and wiretapping, punishment without trial, a dictatorial regime in other words. It would be possible to bring the level of crime in this country down markedly by implementing all kinds of draconian measures to make us safer. Is that the conservative ideal?
