Mermaid, I hope your furnace got fixed....its 17 degrees here and falling fast, and the wind chill is making it even colder. But I lived in the upper midwest years ago (Madison, Wi--that defined cold!!). I do second the suggestion of the humidifier attached to the furnace--we have one too, and it is good not only for your skin and respiratory system, but it helps your furniture and other things (like antiques) that are sensitive to drying out in the winter.
And as for car starters--I need one too. are they trustworthy in terms of not draining your battery or causing other problems? (I came home from a trip last winter...XM radio had drained Jeep battery in airport garage....I spent a very cold hour or so waiting for the emergency truck to come give me a charge. The parking lot at my college is a long cold walk and a dead vehicle in winter is not a good idea.)
