"They're singing 'America the Beautiful' while drinking Coca-Cola! How much more American assimilation can they have? Maybe if they were open-carrying a gun shaped like Jesus, while using a bald eagle strap-on to **** an apple pie.

most white folks would agree that massive immigration equals assimilation issues...the coke ad is, in effect, asking for it in an unintentional way.

We've regressed as a nation since 1971. It's not as if coke hasn't gone a similar route before. They had the "I'd like to teach the world to sing" theme. Today's panic stricken right wing would be freaking out over it. Maybe in some parts of the country they freaked over it in 1971. I certainly never met anyone who had a problem with it. Coke has every reason to beef up their appeal internationally. The U.S. only makes up about 40% of their total market, and the biggest opportunities for growth lie outside of this country in places they have not yet cracked. I don't think they care that a few Bubbas are going to start drinking Pepsi. i'm going to call Bubba's bluff on that. Without his Coke, where will he put his peanuts?

One of my daughters boyfriend recently spent a week in Guatemala working for Habitat for Humanity. The work was gratifying for him and his volunteer crew, but the food and living conditions were challenging by American standards. Yesterday, upon arrival at the Miami airport, the boyfriend made a beeline to the in-terminal Wendys, as he was in fast food deficit. He told me it was funny to be served by a Wendy's employee who could not speak English after working on crews that needed local interpreters. He was expecting English upon returning to the U.S. The same dynamic is true here in Orlando. Many thousands of Puerto Ricans escaping the island for the dream of America and they can't speak the language. In time I'm sure most will. The largest ethnic group in this country is German American, and they went through the same issues.

No really, it's just a bunch of dumb asses *****ing over the fact that they had to hear (as they erroneously point out) our "national anthem" in a foreign tongue. A lot of people are pissed at what they see as multiculturalism creeping into our society. The 1971 video enrages people for the same reason. Read some of the comments.

If you're going to live in Miami, it migh be in your best interest to learn Spanish. The forces compelling you to do so are much stronger than any possible government intrusion that would attempt to make English the official language. That's just cold hard reality for better or worse. There are plenty of bilingual citizens who will alternate between Spanish and English on a whim, depending on which way the wind is blowing. Fifty years from now, those who steadfastly cling to English only may be screwing themselves, and on top of that they are going to be very angry and miserable.

Consider the millions of German Americans, many of whom settled the Midwest still posting billboards and business signs in public, in Deutsch today. Many Spanish speakers are not assimilating because of the sheer size of their local communities. I submit the Spanish speakers clinging to their language will be screwing themselves, and limiting their growth and freedom of effortless societal movement.Regarding language issues that threaten societies, see Canada.

Paul Ryan 2009

key question that ought to be addressed in any healthcare reform legislation is, are we going to continue job-lock or are we going to allow individuals more choice and portability to fit the 21st century workforce?"

Paul Ryan 2014

"I guess I understand 'better off' in the context of healthcare. But 'better off' in inducing a person not to work who is on the low-income scale, not to get on the ladder of life, to begin working, getting the dignity of work, getting more opportunities, rising their income, joining the middle class, this means fewer people will do that. That's why I'm troubled by this."

Paul Ryan divorcing himself from reality, as one might expect from someone making pronouncements about the working class from the comfort of a padded chair in a Capitol hearing room. Many beneficiaries of the Affordable Care Act will cut their hours or leave their jobs precisely because they want to help their children move into the middle class by giving them a more nurturing home life. Or because they no longer are forced to work two jobs just for health care coverage, or because they want to start a business of their own, or because they appreciate that working an undignified job until you drop, simply because society doesn't deem you worthy of secure good health unless you do, has nothing to do with "the dignity of work."

Ryan is opposed to raising the minimum wage, surely a path to dignity at work. The real fear here is the "job creators" are realizing they are losing their total control of the labor force that includes many who have been forced to work crappy jobs for crappy wages just to have health coverage or enough cash to pay for a doctors visit.
