Consider the millions of German Americans, many of whom settled the Midwest still posting billboards and business signs in public, in Deutsch today. Many Spanish speakers are not assimilating because of the sheer size of their local communities. I submit the Spanish speakers clinging to their language will be screwing themselves, and limiting their growth and freedom of effortless societal movement.Regarding language issues that threaten societies, see Canada.

Today, everyone I know whose native language is spanish also speaks fluent English. There are many more bilingual native Spanish speaker than there are native English speakers. There is even a problem with immigrants who know only English and regret that they are not fluent in Spanish. Fifty years from now it may be importaant to speak both Spanish and English if you live in this country. It looks as if Spanish speakers already have a leg up since they are more likely to be bilingual. Eventually, the languages may fuse and the result will be something that is unrecognizable as is English of the 11th century. I don't know much about Canada's problems, but I do know that Quebec is my favorite province.

The referendum took place in Quebec on October 30, 1995, and the motion to decide whether Quebec should secede from Canada was defeated by a very narrow margin of 50.58% "No" to 49.42% "Yes".

You need to visit Orlando or Miami. There are tens of thousands of Spanish only speakers here. It would only be important to speak Spanish if the non-assimilation dynamic persists. Canada came within one percent of a split over the English-French struggle. The issue of language as a uniter/divider is not a left-right political struggle but you can try to characterize it as such. The real issue is the over whelming numbers of immigrants and the political land grab that some engage in for personal benefit.

Shouldn't we NW Floridians be speaking a Choctaw or Creek dialect if we truly wanted to properly assimilate to the area?

How about the idea of a job creator being the individual?

Exactly, and those who choose to leave their current job will be replaced with someone seeking employment. This is the way it has always been and always will be. I cannot understand why Republicans are suddenly against personal choice and freedom.

I don't define assimilation as the ability to form certain syllables. We live in a hemisphere in which most of the land mass provides a home to people who don't speak English as a first language. It would be a denial of objective reality to expect that English as we know it today will prevail a century from now. Life is a political land grab that all engage in for personal benefit. Until Spanish-only laws are enacted by the legislature in places like Florida. I dont think Quebec is a good comparison.

"If somewhere within the Bible, I were to find a passage that said 2 + 2 = 5, I wouldn't question what I'm reading in the Bible. I would believe it, accept it as true, and then do my best to work it out and understand it."

Pastor Peter LaRuffa

Almost speechless except to say this is more proof that religion is the total surrender of critical thinking. The Christian right wants to replace knowledge based on facts learned through experiments and observation with this nonsense.

You are a religious bigot. The 1st amendment of the Constitution guarantees freedom of ignorance.

“I’ll tell you why I never answer that question,”

”If I tell you that I haven’t, you won’t believe me. And if I tell you that I did, then kids will look up to me and say, ‘Well, I can smoke marijuana because look how he made it.’”

“Now, when I was 17 and 18 and 16, I made dumb decisions as is. I didn’t need the help of marijuana or alcohol to further that,”

“When you go interview for that job, and that thing pops up in your background check that you got arrested for something dumb, they don’t look at you and say, ‘Ahh, you were just 17.’ There are people who won’t get hired because of that stuff,”

“There are bars that will give you a tough — not drinking bars, legal bars, the Florida bar — that won’t let you [in] because of those issues,”

Marco Rubio - answering with what I'm guessing is a long-winded evasive "yes" when asked if he had ever smoked marijuana.
