The reason the numbers are so much higher in the Army and Marine corps are because these soldiers are in tight living quarters and in a war zone where showers and confined grooming areas are very non discreet.I would imagine straight soldiers knowing who the gay person is in this situation and (he) got a strange look or approach could be harmful to the soldier(s)..I mean we might as well put straight men in the female barracks....it is the same type of example.

Not homophobic but I am telling it like it is.So blast me anyway and add to my negative rep. points.:sarc:

Have you ever been in a situation where you spend several days/weeks in sleeping quarters with gays and females?

I have.

In 30+ years of EMS, I spent a lot of time in close quarters with gay and female Paramedics. In some instances 1:1 sleeping arrangements in a bedroom/office. Not Once did I feel uneasy and not once did any party try to push their sexuality on the other. It's called being a professional.

I strongly believe that the vast majority of our enlisted soldiers are professional enough not to have an issue with someone based on their sexuality. Will there be exceptions. Sure. There are exceptions now with issues associated with aggressiveness do to sex. AND there are severe repercussions associated with those violations.

The key word here is,EXCEPTIONS.You hit it out of the park.I personally feel the government set this rule strictly for safety reasons.Code Red ring a bell?

No, the reason the issue is a firestorm is because of homophobia and stereotypes.

Gay soldiers crossed the Potomac with Washington - it's nothing new.

Gays are currently in the military, they are currently serving in all jobs and zones, they are currently using the same showers, barracks, and living in tight quarters, and they are currently dying for our country.

All this change means is that there can be no more gay witch hunts and discharges of personnel who are doing their job, but are gay.

I'm sure that our dear government felt the same way when the military was segregated. The rules were there for the "safety reasons" to protect the black soldier....:sarc:

BTW....your Code Red reference was about a superior ordering the brutal beating of a soldier do to his sloppiness and not following chain of command.... not his sexual preference......Watch the movie....you'll love Jack;-)

Well you just made my point as Arkie did.
Exceptions and witch hunts. It all boils down to SAFETY of the soldier.

Well, based on your exception reasoning....then the military needs to castrate all male soldiers due to the high percentage of female soldier rape that occurs annually. After all...it boils down to the safety of the soldier.....:sarc:

So gay witch hunts and female rapes are not safety issues? Why do you think they are segregated? And don't ask and don't tell has been issued? Look man,it is what it is and I am done trying to explain why it is an issue but don't worry, the courts will fix it for everyone and when the EXCEPTION takes place, there will be lawsuits and court martials.
