I like checks - I can use them instead of carrying large amounts of cash and if there is a problem I can call the bank and have them stop payment.

Credit card fraud seems to be skyrocketing. I've had 2 calls from credit card companies about questionable charges in the last 2 weeks. One was fraud and that card was canceled. The other was just them being cautious - a lot of Sowal business like V look sketchy on statements and get flagged.

My wife had gone through identity theft and it is a nightmare. Crooks busted her window and stole her purse (she forgot she left it on the back seat). To be honest it was easier to cancel the credit cards and have new ones reissued. The checks that were stolen kept being processed by a drive through teller even though the account numbers had all been changed. The police said that the suspects were found on bank cameras only as being heavily disguised. It seems as the weak link in many banks are the tellers who are not trained very well to detect suspicious behavior. In fact the crooks would tell the tellers that they could not remember the new account numbers and the tellers would give them the new account number! The bank actually reccommended her to close down her account with them and find another bank. If crooks are that bold then I can only imagine how much of their energy is being into credit card fraud.

I told you about my grandmother's art in writing checks but my grandfather's (on the otherside of the family) also had a unique method of "banking" which is, "never give your money to someone else to keep safe". He only dealt with cash and would store it in a safe or a coffee can hidden in different places. By the way he always had access to a colt 45. I guess he learned a few things from going through the great depression. I wonder what he would think of online banking?

What you described above is why the majority of my money is in a small bank where they actually know me and my family.

It's hard to steal someone's identity when they know which accounts get dog biscuits in the drive-thru tube.

Changing gears, which side of the family?

I'm pretty sure I was a pallbearer for one of your cousins.

Really? Oh, you must have grown up in Bainbridge. I believe I remember talking to you at the funeral.

Grandfather on my father's side. His bank was a fortified safe on his back porch. My father and his brothers would hide on a roof overlooking the safe when my grandfather would open it to try and see what was inside. An older brother once got caught spying on the process and got a terrible whipping. His safe and hidden cash was more like a bank in the community. He would loan cash with land as the collateral, charge interest and many times ended up with the land. Ahh, the good old days!

There was one teller at our credit union who would pull up our account when Bill walked through the door. AND they know that I want the cinnamon disks not the peppermints!

And I still pay bills by check but never carry them or use them at stores.

Write maybe 1 check every month or three. I do, however, carry my checkbook with me, and I write the amount I am spending on my debit card in the register immediately. Hubby used to use his debit card and leave a pile of receipts on the table. UGGHH!!!

Okaloosa Gas. Pool heat. They make me give a check number to pay them. Hellnaw, I don't even carry checks anymore.
I just fixed that so that they take it out the typical charge of $11.88 out of my bank account automatically. But in the cooler months when renters are there and they ask for pool heat and they blast out the pool heat, the bill can sometimes be $250 per week or more. Yet that's when the rental rates are low. :bang:
