I just wanted to share this from a friend.
Last week, a dear friend was given a 24 hour notice to vacate her
mobile home. The owner wanted the property for his daughter. My
friend is a disabled, thirty-two year old mother of an eight year
old. She has an amputated leg from her diabetes and she is currently
on dialysis while she waits for a kidney transplant. She is from
Norway and does not have any family here to help her. Needless to
say, she is very ill and was really needed help. It was a Wednesday
afternoon so I called nine different churches in the area closest to
her home (Springfield, Cedar Grove, Parker) and left detailed
messages explaining her dilemma. I foolishly thought since the
churches have their Wed. night services, they could make an
announcement about her needs. Surely a few "Christians" with pick-up
trucks would come to her rescue, right ? Well I so was Wrong. Not
one of the churches returned my calls. I am very disappointed in the
churches and their claim of Christianity here in the "bible belt". I
also called Catholic Social Services. The kind lady there who
answered the phone offered to help her after work. Bless you.
Then I got the idea to post the plea for help on the Yahoo groups
Panama city freecycle. This is where I found the Kindness of
Strangers and an out pouring of care and concern for her. It seems
that if there is a need, ask the Freecycle groups. Three women met
her at her house with pick up trucks and they got most of everything
moved. They worked in the heat and in the dark, well past 9:00 p.m.
They even offered to help her unpack her things in her new place
this weekend or whenever she is ready. They did not ask for any
recognition, gas money or anything in return. This is really paying
it forward. I'd like to send a big hug and heartfelt thank you to
each of them. You folks really made a difference.
Also, I'd like to remind the churches of my favorite scriptures...
Luke 6:38...Give, and it shall be given unto you: good measure,
pressed down, shaken together and running over, shall men give into
your bosom. For with the same measure that you meet, there with it
shall be measured to you again." I hope you never find yourself in a
situation like my friend was and if you do, write the Freecycle
group.
Oh, and by the way, my husband a "Damn Yankee" and an atheist from
Wisconsin took off from work and finished moving her. Thanks honey,
I love you.
