I absolutely loved the hollow chocolate Easter bunnies. I agree with SJ on the more religious feeling of Easter. Out came the clip-on bow-tie and saddle shoes. My Dad did used to tell me that the Easter Bunny was going to take my wubbie blanket with him when he passed through. I began to dread the Rabbit's coming. :lol:
when my son was little he couldn't stand the thought of a big bunny coming into his room at night. He never actually said he was scared but he said it would be creepy. :lol: So we always had to leave his basket on the kitchen table for the EB to come and fill. And after I gave it some thought, I could see where it would seem creepy. At least Santa is human and not so threatening to be walking around in the living room.

I'm a purist....on Easter eve one puts a carrot in an empty basket....and sometime during the night the Easter bunny lines it with colored cellophane grass and fills it with jelly beans; peeps; hollow chocolate bunnies/eggs; chocolate covered coconut cream egg with a sugar flower on top; a few colored hardboiled eggs; and maybe adds a bow and a small stuffed rabbit or chick. He also leaves the top of the carrot (with appropriate chew marks) next to the basket. <Nano Ipods and gift cards indeed :roll:>

This was our Easter, minus the carrot. We colored some eggs last night; the EB hid them and left some plastic eggs with candy and quarters, two big chocolate bunnies for the boys, assorted other candies & jelly beans, and a little Peeps stuffed bunny for Katiefunn. We had an egg hunt, church and everyone took a nap after lunch. Nice & simple.

When my kids were small I always bought them a new beach pail then filled it with Easter goodies. I felt baskets were a waste, they get sticky from the candy and the easter grass gets stuck to the dogs.

Now that they're older I still make a big (candy bowl) basket for us to share. I bought myself 2 new pairs of wedgie sandals & a new handbag at Marshalls. I wore a pair today, very comfy! I got my son a new shirt. He fixed the screen porch replacing screens and trim, etc. Last month I ordered a small chest, old european style, cherry wood w/hand painting (?) on the doors, black marble top and 4 feet!!! (It sounds extravagant but its actually quietly painted) The huge TV he'd gotten us for Christmas looked so terribly modern in my antiquey style living room. We'd set it up on the old fake 'oak' wood TV cabinet, what an eyesore. (A bargan from target when I didn't have much $$ to get anything better). Anyway he set it all up and it looks marvelous!!! I'm so thrilled that it blends in beautifully and doesn't overstate anything else. Honestly I should go to design school because if I do say so myself, I chose the exact piece for my LR.

I treated him to dinner out rather than cook and have all the leftovers hanging around. Afterwards I took my dog to the beach to run around. It was chilly so we didn't stay long. Yesterday I took her to the dog park, it was beautiful warm spring day.

We had a nice peaceful Easter. What lovely weather we were blesed with!

Great to hear...a nice and simple Easter--a day to dress the tots up for church: Clip-on ties and untucked shirts for little boys; and scratchy dresses with pastel-ribboned bonnets held in place with too-tight elastic bands for little girls.

My prayer is that Easter won't turn into the gimme-fest that Christmas has become.

Untucked shirts yes, bonnets and clip on ties no ... I gave up non-essential shopping for Lent so we wore what was in our closets. :roll:

As for all the little gifts, I probably would have thrown in some little books and Hot Wheels too, except I never did make it to Target. I got everything at the grocery store at 8 p.m. last night when it was already 50 percent off. :lol: Little gifts are not so bad, especially if it cuts down on the candy. I agree in general though, I always err on the side of doing too little.

We go all out for holidays because we scrimp n' save, penny pinch all year. I enjoy the gift part as much as just walking in the park. Easter was exciting, yummy and quiet and I wouldn't have changed one thing....except to have my dear bro back to spend it with us. Who knows maybe he was with us all the way!

There's a big push to "cut down on holiday candy" these days....truth be told, "back in the olden days (50s/60s)" we didn't have 24/7 access to the amount of candy and junk kids have now...so the candies we received during the big 3: Christmas, Easter and Halloween, were a big treat for us kids and not such a big deal with our parents.

No kidding! Too many choices, consumer economy, blah blah blah.

My main reason for trying to keep it simple for the kids is that they have all the advantages, and so much access to stuff all the time. So we really try to emphasize the meaning of the holiday(s), though it is really hard sometimes amid all the consumer noise. I'm not sure what happens when kids start comparing notes with their friends though. My 8 year old is completely non-acquisitive and I don't think I'll be so lucky with the other two. :blush:

Yes and we didn't have daily meals of fast foods. My parents cooked and times that we had Hardee's was if & when we got a good report card and got promoted. Or if Dad had extra $$ we went to Howard Johnson's $1.99 Fish Fry for Friday's supper.

{{I wanted to note that the chest for our TV was actually ordered to arrive in time for my birthday in April. It just happened to have arrived early. It wasn't planned for Easter, but it was nice that it came when my son was off from school and able to set it up}}
