Beck/Palin Rally to Honor MLK?

Fox News personality Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will be held on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech there.

Beck says he's carrying on the work of MLK.

Beck has said he believes that President Obama is a racist with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

Glenn Beck should not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.

The only problem with your argument is that Glenn Beck never called Shirley Sherrod a racist, or fired her. Ummm, that would be your peeps at the USDA and maybe the White House. But then again I am sure that the President would agree that Beck is just a "typical" white person!!

I will debate any liberal, anytime, anywhere, because when you have facts on your side, it makes life so much easier.

How many times have you actually watched Glenn Beck? Just curious...

Hi Darren, I look forward to going a few rounds with you on some issues. Stick around and keep posting.

To answer your question- I watch Beck about once a week if we're looking at an average. Some weeks I'll watch him 3-4 times and sometimes I'll skip a week.

In response to your long post...

I believe that the blogger released the Sherrod video with the intention of exposing racist speech. And I presume you are correct that he did so against the backdrop of the allegations of racism in the Tea Party. So it isn't a stretch for you to say he wanted to expose a "double standard".

But the obvious problem is that the blogger only released the portion of the Sherrod video that includes the racist elements. This is the ultimate example of quoting out of context. The story Sherrod told in the video is very different if you watch it in its entirety than if you watch the blogger's edit. The story ends with personal redemption and transformation.

In your long post you seem to have left this part out as well. Kind of an important detail of the video and therefore an important detail in our analysis and discussion/debate of these issues, no?

:dunno:

So let's talk Tea Party, spittle and the F and N words.

Are there folks on the left who want the Tea Party destroyed? I don't know. Perhaps. Are there folks who call BS on the tea party or who disagree with them or who dislike their approach or who fear them or who think some of their membership is over the top? Well, of course. But let's put that aside and let's just focus on the facts (as you said).

No one of significance claimed that the Tea Party is racist. The beef the NAACP and others had was that the Tea Party leadership didn't seem to denounce the racist elements within the group. They felt that the Tea Party provided safe harbor to such behavior.

Now was this beef politically motivated? Probably. But regardless- all the Tea Party had to do was issue a release categorically denouncing racists and their behavior and setting the record straight that the actions of a few bad apples shouldn't taint a respectable organization. Period, end of story. But instead the Tea Party leadership seemed defiant. What I basically heard was- We aren't going to take the time to denounce racism because the tea party is focused on out of control spending, high taxes and sending a message in November. The way they handled this made it an issue, IMHO.

Did a guy really excited about the health care issue talk to close to someone and accidentially get some spit on them? Yes. And I believe he apologized. The elected official and the media blew that out of proportion.

Did anyone call an openly gay member representative the f word? Did someone else call an African American representative the n word? That's what was claimed by them. And initially I believed the claims. But I am intrigued that someone offered $100,000 for proof and no one could produce it. But my takeaway isn't that there is a conspiracy to destroy the tea party and that officials intentionally walked through a mob to stir up tensions in order to be able to make false claims that protesters hurled hate speech.

The democrats have no substance, no accomplishments, and no class. They are far removed from the party of JFK. They have been co-opted and hijacked by George Soros, his international banker buddies, and the media is helping them. It is no wonder why FOX and Glenn Beck's ratings are so high. Everyone who makes fun of Beck, NEVER challenges his material-because they can't.

Here is where you move away from engaging in intelligent discussion and more toward venting emotions and communicating disingenuously. Be honest- there are numerous examples of substance, accomplishments and class in the democratic party. You said you'd debate any liberal. That's all good but I gotta tell ya- if your debate style is to regularly employ absolute terms (always, never, everyone) then I am afraid you will regularly lose debates.

This "Tea Party" movement is scaring the hell out of the "Establishment" because they have NO control over it, and the direction that it will lead us to. The days of two-party progressive rule is OVER!

We are so much closer to a democracy today, the very thing that our "founding fathers" warned us about, and NOW is the time to stand up and say NO. We are a representative REPUBLIC, hopefully one who will soon have "TERM LIMITS" for all members of congress, no matter what your name is, what socialist you know, or what the color of your skin may be. It is time to close the border, support legal immigration, encourage our "illegal alien" friends who just want a better life, to gain "we the people's" trust by FOLLOWING OUR LAWS, realizing that what makes us so great is that we are a "free republic" with a constitution as our guide, which allows us to be a "nation of laws."

Who is the establishment? Do you mean Democrats and Republicans? Incumbents? Or just the left? Because I personally believe the two party system (along with the corporate lobby and the media) are what ails us. And I too am for term limits. So pls be mindful that these sentiments don't belong exclusively to you and yours on the right.

And I personally do fear the tea party. But for reasons different than you might think. I am scared that people who stand for things I can get behind (less spending, less gov't control, etc.) are being swindled by the Republican party under the guise of "freedom" and "patriotism".

I have an issue with citizens becoming convinced that now is the time to be outraged because of excessive taxation and illegal immigrants running rampant. The truth is taxes are closer to historical lows than they are to historical highs. And the current administration has done more to enforce existing immigration laws than the previous one has.

I give the New York Times for retracting the report of the "Tea Party" using the "N" word. Now if only democrats could apologize and/or admit that what they did was wrong, maybe we could make progress in this country.

You are saying that progress in this country hinges on who apologizing for what? I'm sorry. I'm not with you.

Now we hear how Charlie Rangle and Maxine Waters are being targeted because they are black, right Rev. Al? Once again, a double standard because I do not recall Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Jackson, or the other "black role models", apologizing to the Duke Lacrosse team, EVEN AFTER all charges on the boys were dropped, when the black accuser had a history of lying and making false allegations. WHY NOT? MEDIA, WHERE ARE YOU?

I agree that it is nonsense for anyone to say their corrupt behavior is being exposed because of their phenotypical traits. Sharpton and Jackson are off here and my guess is they are playing to their base just as every other poilitico does. But none of that matters to me. What we should be discussing is that we have politicans investigating each other- crooks responsible for watching and punishing crooks. Fix that (and add the term limits) and the corruption goes away along with anyone saying they are being singled out based on race.

And finally, "LAKE VIEW", sorry I had to put all of this out here before I got to my points but I am sick and tired of people changing arguments. Now, I think Ms. Sherrod is a borderline racist, even after hearing the WHOLE tape. Did you listen to all of it, and not just the clips? The matter of her being a racist can be debated and I can see points from both sides. What can't be debated is the fact that the NAACP members in attendence, in the beginning of that speech, when it appeared she was a racist, they did NOT know that she was making a point that we all need to get along and that race really did not matter. The members were chuckling, laughing, and snickering, when everyone agrees that it appears that she was indeed a racist. Mr. Breitbart did NOT call for her to be fired, nor did ANYONE at FoxNews, and he did NOT have to show the whole tape because his point was displaying the hypocrisy of the NAACP and their meritless letter written to the "Tea Party." As a matter of fact, FoxNews never even showed the video until Secretary Vilsack fired her. So it was the USDA, the White House, and the US governments job to investigate the WHOLE story, not that of FOX or Breitbart. And the "side note" of this story is that the NAACP, after originally condemning Sherrod's remarks, said publicly that they were "snookered" by FoxNews. Excuse me, but wasn't Ms. Sherrod speaking at an NAACP event? It is just much easier to blame FOX, the Tea Party, Breitbart, oh and lets not forget Bush(TWO YEARS LATER). Everyone gets blamed except every racial "situation" that comes up, there is a pattern of democrats, the administration, even the President himself, of jumping the gun. Did we all forget Professor Gates and how Barack Obama commented on a local police matter without having all of the facts. I think Obama said "the Cambridge police acted stupidly." Let's just blame everyone else for our problems, and not look back, or apologize, ever, even when it is proven that we are wrong-in fact, let's double down, and if we keep lying enough, maybe the dems, and the American people will believe their lives. How about we start using some common sense, admit when we are wrong, and learn from our mistakes. Oh wait, I forgot we are talking about Washington DC.

There's just too much in this last paragraph for me to keep up with let alone comment.

proud conservative

the only thing beck unites are tenderheaded fools and the people p,t, barnum was talking about. the man is so dumb i honestly find it hard to believe that he actually believes what he airs on t.v. no one is that stupid its gotta be an act.. as a proud white conservative i am embarrassed that he and the likes of Palin speak and represent our party publicly. they both make us look like ignorant, uneducated easily manipulated morons. the only positive thing about them is that they attract the illiterate individuals that vote outside their financial niche and we will accept those poor white trash votes

Check out the October Mad Magazine. They do a parody of the Wizard of Oz called the Wizard of O(bama). Beck plays the tearful cowardly lion. O'Reilly plays the unfairCrow, Olbermann plays the tinman, Palin plays the wicked witch (witless witch), and of course, Obama is the wizard.

Greta says Beck should "move his event"

Greta Van Susteren says:

"On August 28th my colleague Glenn Beck is going to lead an event on the mall in Washington, DC. It is the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. The event is causing much controversy ...some support and some don't support and some are even furious and upset. Yes he has a First Amendment right to do it...but what about the wisdom of it? Remember...the Muslims in NYC have a First Amendment right to build a mosque but most Americans don't want it...and you have to ask the wisdom of the Muslims to push the issue. Just because you have the right to do something does not mean you should. My view? No mosque at ground zero and Glenn should move his event.
It does not help heal the country on so many fronts if we poke a stick in eyes."

Question for a colleague…. ? Gretawire
