Lately, I've noticed a real decline in the quality of most of the magazines I used to enjoy. It's become rare that I get more than a half hour of entertainment from the subscriptions I get.

I'm looking for some good recommendations -- particularly home decor. I used to love House & Garden, but it went out of business. Domino has been an acceptable substitute, but I've heard they are about to go under, too.

My one bright spot and absolute favorite new magazine -- Garden and Gun. It's fabulous. There is an essay this month from Roy Blount, Jr. called "When You Marry a Woman, You Marry Her Dog," which literally had me laughing until my stomach hurt.

My big magazine indulgence is Wallpaper- glossy British style/home/design mag that comes across as a little self-important at times but I do love the pictures. I also like Western Interiors, which is normally far more than ranches and ski lodges. Metropolitan Home's a staple and generally really cheap for a subscription. I also like Dwell and Atomic Ranch, but they do mostly modern and aren't to everyone's taste.

For world news, I love The Economist like a big lovey thing. So, so, so much better than Time, Newsweek, and the ilk.

Argggg! I know what you mean. I used to like Smithsonian until they decided they needed to be trendy and trite.

Have you looked at Simple and Martha Stewart?

Both Mom and I really don't like Domino!

Have you tried Dwell? Some of the articles are hit or miss topics, but it presents a variety and I find interesting stuff in every magazine.

Dwell and Smithsonian are only ones that I consistently enjoy. Smithsonian I always find fascinating and feel I learned something cool.

Time and Newsweek need to relearn how to edit and stop doing 7 page features w/ one page of interesting info.

Bon Appetit has rather unappetizing pictures of the food and whenever they do a story on somewhere I know it makes me laugh because it is so unrealistic.

I have recently added National Geographic, so am hoping I will enjoy that one.

National Geographic has always been a favorite. I finally figured out why Doctors have them, they're timeless until you've read the same one 20 times.

Not sure if you can get it, but you might enjoy Architectural Record. It has articles regarding the world of architecture, and has anywhere from 1-30 pages of new product reviews. Some of them are $30,000 lucite chairs, but they have some really cool stuff that is more realistic. I think the coolest in a while was the 3D carpet that had different textures from different angles.

If you want a good read, New Yorker and Atlantic are hard to beat. Economist is good, also expensive. For home decor, Dwell, (which has declined over the years also), Western Interiors is fabulous, though haven't seen one for 6 months.

I was in the doc's office last week and read the Emerald Coast Mag which I always like because of all the photo pages of local events.

Which reminds me, in the Dec-Jan issue there is an article about the mag searching for the Coasts' best singles. Maybe we should start another thread for that and come up with some good names to send in?;-)

I was going to suggest Garden and Gun but you have already found this jewel of the publishing world. A beautiful magazine, with fabulous photos and quality paper. I love it. This month's edition had an article on the best catfish place ever, Taylor Grocery, outside of Oxford, Ms. Yummy.

I also enjoy House Beautiful and Creative Home and you can't beat the price on this local one, http://www.southerncoasthomedesign.com/

You can either view it online or pick up a print copy from advertisers or newstand locations.

My perfect beach
Veranda has some of the most beautifully photographed rooms I've seen. House Beautiful and Traditional Home have nice photos, as well. I don't get into the articles in the home decor magazines as much. I thought Domino was a "shopping" magazine, like Lucky, but for home stuff.

Southern Living/ Coastal Living are long-time faves.

I will definitely check out Garden & Gun (intriguing name), and while I've read The Economist, I've never subscribed. Now might be a good time. Magazines are hurting; there's some real deals on subscriptions out there now. I'd guess they're just trying to maintain their circulation numbers for ad revenue.

While you're out, pick up a free copy of new local mag Vie. It contains a well-written article by a sowaler, featuring a photo of a couple of other sowalers you may recognize. ;-)
