I really like Metropolitan Home. Architectural Digest has style that is too expensive for my pocketbook. And lately Southern Accents is getting too fancy for me.

The December issue of Gourmet is great. There are about two dozen recipes in it that I want to try. Yes, there are too many ads. And most months the recipes are too complicated unless one can afford a personal chef.

I have subscribed to Southern Living since 1975, but it is mostly directed towards 30-somethings. I have obviously outgrown that. But maybe it keeps me in touch with reasonably priced decorating suggestions.

Fashion magazines? I used to use Vogue as my Bible for how to dress and would spend a fortune to dress like that and to not wear the same outfit more than once a month in the carpool line. (Flagellate me for that if you wish. I am totally over that -- I am into comfort, not prestige). But I do need to maintain a certain level of style so as not to embarrass my executive husband. But why do I need to buy fashion magazines when I have a daughter as a consultant? She has impeccable taste.

Oh, and I read Newsweek every week.

Bad time to select new magazines. . . .ad sales are down, they can't afford as much content. I've noticed all my mags have gone south. I've given up on them and have decided to tackle a few books until the quality improves!

Magazines are such a waste of fancy paper. For years, I watched the magazines come into our home, only to be tossed aside, and piled up with the daily newspapers which no one ever had enough time to read. My mom is a magazine freak, and now she actually has time to flip through the pages. She, also, is a fan of Garden & Gun, Southern Living, all of those other home magazines like Southern Accents, Cottage Living, etc.

But for me, it's the glossy paper that makes them worth it on the fashion and design pjorn magazines. The pictures just don't have the same nice look on a computer screen.

VIEzine.com Full Magazine Online

I've really enjoyed VIE Magazine published (at least their office is in Grayton Beach off Logan Dr.) right here on 30A. You can pick up free copies all around the county in stores, NoWal and SoWal Chambers, etc. Or, view the entire magazine online in a page turning format by going to VIEzine.com. An article on New Urbanist Art Movement on 30A may fit your special interest in design and decorating. Even though the magazine covers from Cola to Cola, lots of stories on SoWal and by SoWallers. (30A Radio and Pensacola 450) to name a few). I may post on another thread because I think they are doing a great job promoting SoWal events and people.

Barrons and "The Week"

"The Week" mag is like a weekly Reader's Digest of topical stories and trends; a compilation of stories and aricles from the WSJ, major newspapers (NYT, Boston Globe, etc), Arts and Leisure (books, film, travel, music); Business & Finance; a recipe or two, and the weekly editorials and editorial cartoons from across the nation : http://www.theweek.com/home

It's a easy read that informs and entertains and can be read cover-to-cover or in short bursts--say during TV commericals or with a quick cup of coffee. I like it better than any of the other weeklies (Time, Newsweek, etc)

Barrons is good for finance wonks (more of a tabloid than a magazine).

I don't read a daily paper, have gone paperless with as many bills/notices as I can, and keep unsubscribing to as much junk mail and catalogues as I can. Reading Smithsonian and National Geographic will do more to aid conservation than me canceling those subscriptions to save paper.
