where do you usually go out? maybe we could hook up...you could give me a few pointers..

Depends which way the wind is blowing and my work schedule. My office is just up from the 83 access at Blue Mountain. I have been surfing there allot lately. There is a nice break to the left of the beach walk over. Sometimes I go to Destin when the wind is pushing hard in that direction. It really depends on the wind. Most of the time you can find me at Blue Mountain. Call my cell when it is up and I would love to give you some pointers. Remember, surfing is all about paddling and finding the sweet spot on your board. Catching a wave and surfing is the reward!

Mango, my short boards range from 6'2' to 6'8". I would never be caught on a sponge (boogie Board)!:D

I ride a sponge because it hurts a lot less when I run into people.

Pensacola always warms up sooner than Destin, Walton and PCB. It's because of a natural current that runs onshore from the timberholes. So, while the temp reading of 77 is somewhat high for this time of year, it isn't out of line with the observed cooler temps further east -totally normal.

Related to this is the cobia season. Almost always, the first cobe will be caught between Navarre and the Pensacola pier. These fish are resident cobes, spending the winter in the timber holes and similar, deep-water areas. The reason is that these resident fish follow the warm water current inshore and along the beach. These fish are usually smaller than the migrating fish. The migrating fish that come up from the Dry Tortugas don't do so until a trigger is pulled, based on a combination of minutes of moonlight per night and water temp. When you see cobes caught between Destin and PCB, you know that the migrating fish are here, and that's when you'll see the 100+ lb'ers- the ones that win $100,000 for the angler.

The Timber Holes is an area of limestone ledges that formed around timber stands in a prehistoric forest. It's about 25 miles ese of Pensacola pass, and is about 125' deep. It's a great fish habitat, and holds a lot of lobster too!
