The difference is there isn't protected wildlife in these places.

The issue a minute ago was that you were camping near someone who was carrying a weapon. And yes, there is protected wildlife outside of national parks. We don't treat them like the Indians. You might want to sit this one out.

Too bad it's illegal to shoot a bear!

A gun is not how you deal w/ a problem bear.

This is how you deal w/ a problem bear (from firsthand experience):

1) Don't leave food or other things out in the open to attract a bear - this includes bird feeders and your trash. When camping you hang your food out of reach away from your tent, do not bring food or food scented items into your tent, or use a bear proof container (standard at many campgrounds).

2) If a bear is trying to get into a certain area, put down a piece of plywood w/ nails driven through it (like a carpet hanging strip). It hurts their paws and they go away. Loud noises also scare them off (not gunshots, but banging pots together etc.)

3) If the problem persists and the bear is a danger to humans, call in the professionals. Your tax dollars pay to have a wildlife officer come w/ a bear trap (which they bait for you). They will then come take the bear away and relocate it. Bears are on the 2 strike system - first time tagged, second time they get killed.

See attached pics of the bear trap - basically a metal storm culvert w/ closed ends and a trailer hitch! The hatch is so you can see what tripped it.

Picture 3 is the bear in the trap!

Poachers are criminals. I seriously doubt that they all jumped up and said "Oh my God. There is a law against carrying a gun in a National Park. Now we have to quit our criminal behavior because we would not want to break two laws."

It is much easier to catch someone carrying a gun than to catch someone poaching. Hence the rule.

The amount of time a poacher is able to be caught poaching is small.

The amount of time a poacher is within a national park's boundaries carrying a weapon is large.

Thus from an enforcement standpoint it is much easier to prohibit someone from carrying a weapon that has no lawful use within the park - as since animals in a national park are protected, you wouldn't be able to shoot one (even a snake) for "self-defense" even if that was a plausible concern.

Whose we? are we discussing party lines? last I heard Palin wanted to delist polar bears from the endangered species list since because those pesky polar bears would have interfered with drilling for oil and gas. Let's not forget about those dang wolves and bears that kill the caribou that she has shot aerially. No, we do not treat animals like Indians, we just shoot them.

The rule is going to allow carrying concealed weapons. So are your proposing that we just go ahead and search everyone in a national park?

We. As in the US. It was a joke, as we contained the Indians, but were not as good as containing protected species. You were against guns in national parks first because you were afraid someone would do you harm. Now you are against them because you are worried that someone will kill a protected species. What's next? Against them because someone might rob a bank? Because someone is more likely to commit espionage? Because you are worried that someone might jaywalk? That is why I said it might be best if you sit this one out.
