Too bad it's illegal to shoot a bear!
A gun is not how you deal w/ a problem bear.
This is how you deal w/ a problem bear (from firsthand experience):
1) Don't leave food or other things out in the open to attract a bear - this includes bird feeders and your trash. When camping you hang your food out of reach away from your tent, do not bring food or food scented items into your tent, or use a bear proof container (standard at many campgrounds).
2) If a bear is trying to get into a certain area, put down a piece of plywood w/ nails driven through it (like a carpet hanging strip). It hurts their paws and they go away. Loud noises also scare them off (not gunshots, but banging pots together etc.)
3) If the problem persists and the bear is a danger to humans, call in the professionals. Your tax dollars pay to have a wildlife officer come w/ a bear trap (which they bait for you). They will then come take the bear away and relocate it. Bears are on the 2 strike system - first time tagged, second time they get killed.
See attached pics of the bear trap - basically a metal storm culvert w/ closed ends and a trailer hitch! The hatch is so you can see what tripped it.
Picture 3 is the bear in the trap!
