On 3/14 at 1:59 many people celebrate Π Day. Y'all know I love math. Π is so interesting. It is an irrational (infinite, non-repeating) number. The fact that Π is the number that is obtained by dividing the circumference by the diameter of any circle gave the number great reverential qualities. This was known to ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Indian and Greek mathematicians. The earliest known approximations date from around 1900 BC, according to Wikipedia.
My favorite fact is that Π equals
4 - 4/3 + 4/5 -4/7 + ...
I also like that MIT sends out their acceptance letters on Π Day (daughter has one).
Last year on Π Day a tornado went through Atlanta and damaged the Georgia Dome during the SEC Tournament. The Westin Hotel's windows have still not been repaired. Now today on Π Day some of the lights in the Georgia Dome went out during the UNC/FSU game in the ACC Tournament, and there was a delay of game. Weird!
